<shrug>
I stick with my original suggestion.
Make a sticky thread with the name of the thread and the reason it was pulled. It's not that much work.
That way:
1) People know what happened to threads (esp. OPs and honest contributors).
2) People may appreciate the job that mods do more.
3) More importantly, everyone knows which moron(s) is/are responsible for a thread deletion, which would, I believe, lead to an increase in self-moderation. There would be a little more peer pressure on useless posters to clean their act up. Right now there is no such incentive.
I understand the situation you're in. Frankly, it's the reason why there's 'free speech' in most countries -- because it takes an awful lot of work (and stepping on people's toes) to control it. It's a losing battle. The way to get it under control however, is not to be more strict. The way to bring it under control is to foster a society where the social culture discourages the actions you wish to control. The only real way to do this is to increase the transparency of moderation. The sticky is one way. Another is greater interaction with the user base.
The fact that you get paid or not is irrelevant. This is the job you chose to do, and because of that commitment, you should do the best that you can. If you can't because of other commitments, then quit.
Just some random hackneyed "free speech" ranting.. |

IllNine, did you not read this part?
This discourages and frustrates legitimate users and drives them away, as well as destroying the image of this sitean unacceptable proposition to Dave Sperling, who IS the owner of this site, for whom it IS a commercial proposition (i.e., his bread and butter), and who HAS appointed us to keep the forums relatively sane. |

It's not a bad suggestion, IlIlNine. Can't guarantee it'll happen, but it's worth a thought.
On the other hand, it's far easier to make demands of others than to step up to the plate and do something yourself. But the fact remains: there IS something you can do, right now, to avoid having your worthwhile contributions become collateral damage when the Dave's 'tards strike. Report that trash before it reaches critical mass and takes the whole thread out with it.
I, for one, would be far more amenable to reporting on the whens and whys of thread removal in a sticky thread if users took a more active role in reporting inappropriate posts. People love to gripe when a thread is removed, but how many of you actually do anything when you see something that's clearly beyond the pale? It's akin to people in a crime-ridden neighborhood who complain about heavy-handed police responsebut do nothing when they witness a crime in progress. |

esetters, I don't know what your beef is. It's quite simple, really.
It's Dave's site. The man has a business to run. He provides the forums as a service to teachers. If that service becomes a detriment to his livelihood, it doesn't make sense for him to continue it. With me so far?
If you like Dave's forums and want to see them continue, play nice, encourage others to do the same, and report those who don't. If you don't like the rules in this sandbox, take your shovel and pail and find another oneor go dig your own mudhole and wallow in it.
If you require unlimited free speech, this isn't the forum for you. I really don't know how to make it any clearer. |

I don't really know how to say this without sounding disrespectful, but when the actual *names* of other sites get replaced with eslcafe.com, how can you make the suggestion that people find other sites? Even in private messages, there's at least one forbidden site name.
If your suggestion is, "If you don't like it here, find someplace else to be," then I think you really need to think about what the back-end of this site is actually doing in order to stop people from doing just that. |

So dave makes a ton from advertized jobs right? Only because of the people on these boards. What if the do go elsewhere?
What's worse is negative threads about heavy advertizers are removed without explaination. |

No beef here as you say. I happen to like shoveling in this sandbox, as I don't have one of my own.
Fair enough, but there has to be something to be said about selective processing. I'm only saying...
That was polite and tactfully said on your behalf, btw... |

Well, that is a double-edged sword. Positive posts here make money and negative ones don't. It's simple economics. |

I think my question was quite direct, and nobody has answered it. Suggesting that people go somewhere else to go when it's impossible to communicate where those other places are...I wonder what the issue is there? |

Mods, if you must delete threads, can't you make a 'deleted thread' sticky and give us an account of who erased it, and the specific reason why? If you are unable to account for your actions in this way, there should be no reason to delete threads. |
Not only that, but if someone explains why a thread was banned we can find out if it was simply someone being too much of a korea-phile to process legitimate thought or if there was something we hadn't thought about when posting.
I know one person who was removed when they said a group of Dok-do protesters were complete idiots and showed how they were through a detailed comparative example. Other people had said the protesters were complete idiots but when turning the tables in an example... that must have been the last straw. No warnings, just banned. I thought that giving a precise example is much more thoughtful than simply name-calling... |

Back to my original point...
I don't think the mods have killed this place off. It's the slowness of the board. Nobody can post. It's bad. I'm beginning to think it's on purpose.
It's nice to see we have some mods responding in this thread, rather than using their socks. Seeing as a few of you almost never post unless you're carrying out some form of discipline, we have to assume you're actually other common posters on here. I'd probably do the same.
So mods.... direct question for public post (no PM's please)....
Why is the board so slow lately? |
