surely they cant just fire you without any reason so you dont get severance pay. Doesnt employment law stipulate you have to commit a misconduct of some kind? Should be all be squeaky clean towards the end of the contract?

yes sir, no sir, yes madam, no madam.....guffaw

'Some' hogwans like to dump crap on teachers near the end of their contracts in hopes that they will either quit, be so embarrased they wont question being ripped off and will crawl silently into the night.

This allows them to rip people off, save money on airfare/severance/1 months pay etc. Remember hogwan owners are two steps lower than snake oil salesmen and 3 steps lower than used car salesmen! Wink

OP, they are scumbags who learn these "tricks" from the Hogwan Associations. They fire teachers in the 11th month and force you to stay and fight a lengthy legal battle to get your money. TIME is on their side as many foreign teachers either are afraid to fight a legal battle in Korea or already have plans to take another job in their home country or Japan. Yeah, it's premeditated and planned and they get away with it far too often. Rolling Eyes

I wonder how many hogwans operate like this? 5 out of 10? 9 out of 10?
I too experienced getting crap in my 11th month where I went from excellent teacher to worlds worst teacher on the shit list in one day with no misconduct or other issues at hand. She could had just fired me, but she knew the 6 other foreigners and foreign head teacher who is the glue of the school would had fought her and forced a school shut down. If it had been a smaller hagwon of say just me or only 2 or 3 foreign teachers, then it's more likely she would have had enough leverage to scare us and control us into being screwed over.

They can, will, and do fire you for any reason or for no reason. It is legal? Nope. But it requires you to fight for the money (whether through the labor board or small claims court), and they count on you leaving the country before you get it.

BERLITZ routinely do this to their instructors in Seoul. Specificaly, anyone who promoted worker rights, fought back against unreasonable workplace demands, or helped fellow teachers in filing Labour Board complaints against Berlitz were often let go in the 11th month.

You just need to show up for work in the 11th month and you could be fired.

Xuanzang,

The nose of the chick you're using for your avitar is too big. Reduce it or you're fired.
