God says "Stay away from the bad people who suggest you buy your own plates".

OP, all God jokes aside (you sound like my mother btw) did your public school provide you with a settlement allowance? If so, then that is the whole purpose of giving you that. Buy your own iron and dishes. For someone that has worked in Korea before as you said, you should know better.

And if I must be blunt, your school is not being tight, you are.

OP,

Please pray for my bitterized Seoul.

I too shall pray to ask forgiveness for my hereticism Wink ; and that God perform a miracle - plates will magically appear on your table.

Ask god to buy you the dishes and irons. He has enough money, people sure do give him alot. I am sure he will be good to you and give you some spare change.

I suppose if there was a god, I would be going to hell for what I just said.

Why would the buy you anything that isn't on the contract?

That is after all what the contract is for, to set boundries and rules.

Have you raised your concern to the school?

I found this advertisement in the For Sale forum http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=143422 I think that Yongin is ~30 minutes outside of Seoul.

Hi,

I am selling the following:

microwave, iron, ironing board, all in one printer, new heater, pans, cups, plates, bowls and other kitchen things, sheets, wooden coat rail, clothes dryer, telephone.

Hahaha, I thought it was bad when my school provided me with one plastic plate, a busted frying pan, a spatula, four forks, and several stained cups instead of, you know, nice stuff like all my friends had from their schools. Popular opinion in the thread suggests that I was ridiculously blessed to get these things which were not in my contract, however! You guys are joking right?

If you are in Seoul, you can buy those things cheap from other teachers who are finishing their contracts and leaving.

If his kid can make wine out of water, then pulling a few plates out of his azz should be nothing at all.

I got dishes and such, but I live in the middle of nowhere (somewhere between Yongin and Gwanju city) and did not get a television.
