I kind of agree!
I like living in itaewon, especially the proximity to namsan park...and I like my flat.
No complaints here. |

I like it too, but don't live there. Yes, of course you can buy cheeses in Itaewon and even food that incorporates it, it's the best place in Korea for foreign foods shopping, except Costco is pretty good. Itaewon also has great bars serving great beer with a population of many other waygooks. Just gotta be careful not to get in a fight as I've seen fights break out in places like Seoul pub which happened on Christmas last week so you don't want to talk politics or get 9 feet tall at the bars. It was so funny what I seen, but not very Christmassy. I had thought Itaewon would have more turkey and pumpkin pie, but there wasn't enough to go around despite Itaewon having more variety offered than anywhere else in Korea. It still pales in comparison to most other countries when it comes to food, fun, and shopping.
There are also lots of great restaurants as compared to the rest of Korea though O'briens pub in Changwon has to top it on meal deals anywhere in K-land. I haven't tried many, becuase there are so many and it would cost me a fortune and make me fat if I tried. I like Chaakra in the back alley. The evening buffet is very good Indian food. I tried the Evergreen, but it paled in comparison to Chaakra.
I think it would be a very fun and convenient place to live if you got the right job and apartment. Of course, anywhere within a half hour subway ride would be good too. I just don't think the jobs are as good in Seoul compared to far outside the city, because they pay 400,000 less, provide tiny apartments with high maintenance and other fees, and probably give you a hard time while playing a hard luck relationship thing with you at work. I haven't heard much good about Gyeonggi-do GEPIK either so you pay the price when it comes to job and apartment quality to enjoy having convenient access to Seoul. Maybe some of you veterans are in the know and are doing really well with minimal work related headaches while you laugh your way to the bank and enjoy the comforts of a huge apartment.
The subway sure makes it convenient to just shoot out to an Emart or Homeplus or almost any point where there's civilization. Of course, Itaewon is not the real Korea, it's a special tourist international district swaying more in the direction of providing a little of the world to Koreans from being a place catering to foreigners such as US Army and ESL teachers. The transformation will really happen when Yongsan shuts and then it'll be strictly Koreans going to taste international foods. |

Haha...I'd like to hear about that one.
This fight/politics story...I can already guess. Recent Canadian college kid graduate lecturing G.I.s...am I right? |

Itaewon is what keeps me sane in this cuntry(notice the spelling) after
13 years here. I live about 40 minutes away. It is not hard to go there
and I don't go there all the time and spend money. But when I do go
there it is heaven. Free books at Wolfhound Book Exchange. So many
different kinds of ethnic food I can't count anymore. It has come a long
way from being a foreigner ONLY place in the 70s and 80s. That's right.
NO Korean males were allowed in. Females of course. No guard posts
now for showing ID and no police waiting to enforce the after 12 midnight
curfew. Used to be the only place to go there was the Seoul Pub and the
Nashville Pub. If you drank after midnight you were in trouble. Or you
had to stay until 6AM. haha
I honestly don't know what some of the people on this board have against
the place. God help them if they ever get to a really wild and cosmopolitan
place like London, New York or Paris. They would probably hate that to.

| Itaewon is good for foreign cuisines, but it's still filled with sleaze. |

They sell all 3.
Given that Busan is a pretty good city, I would say it's too damn far.
Living in Incheon, itaewon is still too damn far.
Cohiba, thanks a lot you priiiiick-I long for the return of no effeminate, insecure male cockblocking kimberly dumbasses allowed in itaewon! |
