Hey guys im a 23 year old gay male currently in the process of applying for a teaching post in South Korea. I was thinking it would probably be best to apply for posts in Seoul or Busan. I was just wondering what the situations like in Korea for young gay guys?? Is there a lot of gay clubs and stuff there? are there any gay western ex pats?? is it legal? ive just started applying so I have no idea what it would be like. |

Well, that's the story you'll get if you ask a Korean (until you find a gay, that is.). I'm sure there are as many gays in Korea as there are anywhere else.
Anyone else have any intel for Will on this one? |

There are no gays in Korea. Except for Kim Heechul.
All joking aside, Koreans don't like gay foreigners. They think you're turning straight Koreans gay.
Loney Planet books have directions of these non-existing gay clubs in Korea. |

Yes I have had Koreans tell me, with a straight face, that there are no gay Korean men. They genuinely believe that those that do exist have weak minds that have been misguided by gay foreigners or western TV.
So yeah, good luck OP. |

I asked a lesbian friend about this, and here is the rundown:
Korea is loaded with untapped gays, but be prepared for a dry-spell when you get here. It'll probably take you awhile to figure out how to go about meeting other gay people.
Another poster suggested Itaewon--I second that. If you live in Seoul I suspect your dry spell will be significantly shorter because of Itaewon. If you live in the countryside, you're going to have a much more difficult time. |

Don't forget about Andre Kim. He's the Liberace of Korea. Nearly every famous actor and male singer has had to sleep with him to get fame.
I recall seeing a movie theatre in Busan that is used for gay cruising. Lots of middle-aged Korean men wandering around and groping each other in dark corners. |

Just like most oppressive cultures, there's a lot of it just below the surface. Openly gay/lesbian Koreans are rare, but there's a thriving underground scene. Our first year here (2005/06), my gf had a gay white male coworker who got more Korean male ass than a toilet seat. Supposedly there are a lot of secret "gay" businesses - saunas, movie theaters, etc - that are known areas to go cruising for guys. |

I work with a gay dude, and he loves it here. He says he's never had more sex in his life. Go to a jimjilbang. That's where he's always picking his Korean sex partners up. |

Why wouldn't this be the case, ya know? Korean men are way more comfortable around each other than the opposite sex. This happens in arabic culture too. |

Ever watch a Korean movie, TV show, music video, or commercial? Chances are at least one guy in it has had sex with Andre Kim.
As far as I can tell, everybody knows, but nobody talks about it. I doubt you could find any official sources online at all. |
