Happy New Year everyone!
I have a question for the Seoul vets and anyone who knows the Insadong/Nakwon area. What are the best bars and restaurants to head to in the area?
Thanks for the help! |

Why would you have to go all the way over there just for a foreigner bar? Why not go to Itaewon or a foreigner bar near your home? If you're in Insadong area, there are tons of places you can go that aren't necessarily catering to foreigners. |

I have some friends who moved into the Insadong/Nakwon area who are interested in knowing what is good in walking distance. They have been to Itaewon and will get to Hongdae, but are interested in getting a lay of the land from people who have been around. They aren't opposed to wandering and checking places out, but would be interested in input.
They like sports bars, food from many nations, elegant bars, dive bars, etc.
Thanks. |

tell them to go to samcheong, north of Insadong by the Blue house. It's kind of yuppie but that's about as close as it gets to "foreign" in that hood. Most places are pretty korean. |

They're not that far away from Itaewon by subway. We're talking less than one hour. |

It's about a 10 minute, 5,000 won cab ride as well.
You're not going to find too many western/foreign bars in the Insadong/Jongro area. In terms of drinking style, that's about as Korean as it gets.
I guess any of the "Ice Beer Bars" on and around Cheongyechon might suffice, and there's a Ho Bar in Jongro that isn't too shabby as well. |

Tomatillo mexican restaurant outside Jonggak subway exit #6 (walk straight 100 meters and it's on your left)

It's so close to Itaewon. I used to walk home from that area over Namsan in about 25 minutes. Don't waste time around there unless you want some Korean stuff. |

From the North end of Insadong, go west and cross the main street. Find the small alley that goes to the back entrance of Fraser Suites. On your left you'll see an Italian restaurant/bar that a lot of expats go to, and within Fraser Suites itself there is a German restaurant and bar - bit pricey, but the menu is good. |

there are quite a few bars around the stream, but they're a bit pricey. |

Oasis is a pretty sweet music request bar in an alley near the intersection of Jongno and Insadong. It's not exactly an expat bar, more like a little hole in the wall, but drinks are cheap and the music selection is great.
Pimatgol is an alley of makkeoli bars right off of Insadong, and the bars there are pretty much the opposite of expat bars, but it's still a fun night out IMHO.
Those are the places I hung out after an afternoon on Insadong, anyway. |

my goodness if you're still taking the train between Jongno and Itaewon - you really need to look at a map and learn the bus routes.
fyi, the 143 goes between there and stops at the Haebonchon bus stop; maybe 20 minutes in medium to heavy traffic, 10 minutes in light.
the fastest way is by cab, as another poster said - but not by Seoul Station - that way is too much traffic - they need to take the tunnel route near Namsan mountain.
here's the Seoul Bus Map in E
*note you need to use IE, doesn't work in Firefox |

Santa Fe, in a basement near the piano key pedestrian mall in Jongak.
Haven't been there in ages, but about as divey as you can get. And the ice bar had cool choices. |
