How easy is it to extend your E-2 visa? I am wanting to extend my contract for 6 more months with the same school, does anyone know how I can go about doing this? I am a South African, if it makes any difference
Also, my school has not officially offered me an extension, but there has been much talk that they would gladly do it. Should I be asking for an increase, even if I am the one wanting to extend, and how should I go about doing this?
Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated!

it is very easy to extend your E-2 visa (I did it twice at my last job, twice at this job), just do it for a year with an understanding that you'll likely only be there for six months (give notice after four months into new contract)
ask for 200,000 won more because it'd cost them at least that in recruiter fees and airfare to find a replacement
present it as: "if I can get 0.2 mill more then I'd re-sign" (but if you're leaving after six months in then maybe settle for 0.1 if they counter)
good luck whatever |

Renewing is easy since you've already done your background check and health check and you're already signed up for your health insurance and pension. You have your ARC and health insurance booklet.
You should get your airfare reimbursement in cash, and 1 year severance payment at the end of your first contract. Don't let them carry over. Put that as a condition in your renewal contract.
You should get an additional 1/2 month severance for your 6 month extension and another airplane ticket, payable at the end of the 6 months. And you should ask for a raise. How much depends on what you're making now and how good you are. If you're already at the top of the market, then 100,000 won per month would be pushing it, but possible. If your pay is below the current market rate, you could get more.
Put everything in writing in your renewal contract. Write it yourself if you can.
Good luck. |

Are you sure about this? I thought that legally, severance only applied to completed 12 month contracts?? The OP might want to check this out. As for the airfare, that's probably down to the employers discretion. |

What you get in your renewal contract is a matter of negotiation. But, customarily you get 2 one-way tickets in your first year, so you should be able to get the same on renewal. At good schools this is standard for renewals. Why should you take less in your renewal period than in your first year? |
