| I've never really understood how people can reach adulthood and still hold an affinity for punk rock. I mean, of course there's the rare good band, but in general punk is right up there with metal as some of the most tasteless/phoned-in crap to ever be put to vinyl. |

Well, that's the thing - I don't prefer any particular genre. I have a few punk bands that have managed to retain their integrity in the eyes of a jaded mid-20's guy. Recently, I've been much more into techno. I like straight "rock," old-school emo, some hardcore, some experimental stuff, some hip-hop/rap, and I can even stomach a little pop.
The only genres I can't abide are country, metal and R&B. |

I like a lot of different genres, but punk just seems to always be there for me and to never go away.

Do we really need to resort to personal insults? We're talking about music genres...
You seem to be missing the important distinction between punk and techno (and the main reason I can't stand the vast majority of "punk" music). Techno is music... it's not a social scene, it's not a "statement." Techno artists don't put on their leather jackets and patches and claim to be counter-culture when they're just as bad as the pop that gets peddled to the unwashed masses on Top 40.
That's where my issue with punk lies. It's too full of shit and self-importance for me to take it seriously. |

| Punk is not about musical virtuosity, it's about an ethos/community. An often petulant, self-righteous ethos/community, but also some pretty good energy at times. |

and social commentary - see Sex Pistols 'God Damn the Queen"
just a song title like that deserves huge respect.
nothing in confrontation with electronic dance music, including techno btw.
in fact, perfectly normal to like BOTH.. as I do.
one of the greatest bands in both genres... was Joy Division/New Order. |

I'll try and explain this a little clearer for you, as you seem to be taking my opinion quite personally. You also seem to be under the impression that I've touted myself as an authority on music - something I certainly have never done. You're entitled to the opinion that punk is relevant and I'm a dumbass just as much as I'm entitled to the opinion that living in a fantasy world where punk is anything more than a business covered with a thin facade of idealism is indicative of low level mental retardation. No offense, of course.
More to the point...
Many forms of music serve a specific function. Dance music, for example, is made to dance to. It doesn't purport to be pure "art," nor does it advertise any message besides "dance." You can't really fault it for being repetitive or formulaic because it's not supposed to be mind-altering or transcendental or stand for anything other than a beat for which to move one's ass.
Punk, on the other hand, purports to be a lot of things. Punk is supposed to be a counter-culture. It's supposed to be rebellious. It's supposed to be satirical or socially aware. It's supposed to stand against art as a business. It's supposed to rage against cultural homogenaity and conformity.
The problem is, punk is a business just like all other genres of music. It's inherently dishonest. It milks kids with disposable income who are too tangled in the throes of teenage angst to know any better. It merely offers a different set of rules to follow and norms to conform to. When I was a kid, I liked punk because I was too stupid to see it for what it was. By the time high school was winding down, I had developed the critical thinking skills to realize what a sham it all was.
From a musical standpoint, the "social message" that punk hides behind is easily its biggest downfall. It impedes innovation because, let's be honest, a tiny fraction of "punks" listen to punk because it's good. They listen to it as a statement - as a lifestyle. Punk bands are shitty, formulaic and devoid of experimentation because there is no impetus to change. If you're not hocking the same four chords and shitty vocals, you risk losing your "punk" cred - which in turn alienates your built-in fanbase.
Of course there are exceptions to the rules. There have been punk bands who innovated, ones who idealistically walked the walk, ones who brought a touch of class and musicality. However, as a genre, punk is dead. Hell, the very idea of a punk genre is about as far from punk as one can be. |

I love punk, but I also like other types of music too. I think insulting people over their preference in music is just childish.
I hate techno music, but I won't insult your taste in music. Nor will I point out that only young kids who pop ecstasy at raves listen to techno music. It will also be silly of me to point out that the Burning Man (until 1996) was mostly a social scene for gays, hippies, and techno music. Plus, it would be unthinkable for me to mention that Moby, Daft Punk, and Sash (sorry.. Sash!) peddle their music to the unwashed masses too.

I love dance music but I don't like techno. Really, I imagine you could only rightfully enjoy it if you're high, which I have never been, not from drugs anyway.  |
