I doubt the parents are going to want anything that resembles studying. Try to have as much free conversation as possible. Have a "topic of the day" (as long as it's not so controversial as to stir emotions). And adopt an "English only" policy in the classroom.

Start a conversation class with "why do you want to learn English" topic. If they don't tell you why, you are off the hook. Razz

A one week class is pointless. Just do the topic based lesson each day and then walk away from it after a week. Don't take the class too seriously and just leave it after a week.

Hope you are getting paid well for it.

So, what did you end up doing? What levels are they? Did they like the class?

What will you do tomorrow?

Assign homework that they can do quickly. If you don't assign homework they will feel you aren't taking it seriously. If you give more than ten minutes of homework they won't do it. A five minute hand-out matching Korean and English key phrases would be ideal.

No. According to my school they fall within my contract hours. And these classes are purported to be free of charge, so no extra coin. Same goes for my 2 weeks of winter classes, 3 hours per day. Mad

But does it specify in your contract what age students are supposed to be? I guess if it falls within your schedule, you're SOL.

You don't get paid extra for winter classes? Are they during different hours than your regular schedule?

Maybe you should buy this:

http://fatcitytattoo.com/vaseline.jpg Laughing Surprised

Do you look like this: Shocked ?

Do you work for a hagwon or a public school?

If you want really good topics that you can use one for every class, try these:

What are you doing now?
What did you do yesterday or on the weekend?
What are you going to do tomorrow or on the weekend?

No need for lesson plans. Works like a charm.

If parents do end up coming, try adapting one of your student lessons to the parents. I'm sure they'd love to see what their kids are doing, and it saves you prep time.

Speak slowly, clearly, and enunciate. Be extra polite, happy, kind, and understanding if they can't speak well. If not, they'll think that you're a crap teacher and pull their kids, and that will only cause you more trouble. Adult students tend to not like teachers that they can't understand. It might be a saving face thing--'My English is fine, you're just a bad teacher.'

Also, expect them to be shy. You have to be the life of the party, asking questions, and getting one word or one sentence answers.

Good luck, I'd hate to be in your shoes...

Engage them with cheap tea and those little cheesebread that comes in a package of 12. Talk about motherly or ajumma like things - cooking Korean food, taking care of kids, what their previous job used to be. I`m sure all these women want to do is tell you about their kids and current/prior lives.
