I thought that being a "city person" would mean higher intelligence or being more worldly. Guess not.

A couple of gems from this week:

Student: I work for Kyunghyang Shinmun. It's famous newspaper worldwide.

Me: Never heard of it.

Student: Do you know New York Times or Guardian?

Me: Of course.

Student: It's same to those newspapers.

Me: Except those newspapers are famous worldwide.

Gem #2

Student: Do you know cyberterror? It's the biggest crime in Korea.

Me: You mean people planting viruses online?

Student: People making celebrities commit suicide. I surprised you don't know. Do you know the internet? (laughing)

Me: Yes, but in most countries celebrities don't care what a bunch of stupid kids say. Korean celebrities need to be more mature.

Have any similar stories?

My students think I'm a rock star. They always ask for my autograph and try to shake my hand. Razz

My co-teachers think two Koreas will definitely be reunited if American forces weren't stationed in Korea. I agree with them. Razz

I have kids of all ages amazed that ham comes from a pig....don't get it and I have no idea where they thought it comes from, but every time we study foods and animals this comes up and the kids say "Really? No, teacher!"

Crazy kids.....

Also reminds me of a time a colleague who is a vegitarian ordered a veggie pizza at Pizza Hut and it came with ham. The manager insited this was their veggie pizza and had no idea why someone would want a pizza with ONLY mushrooms, peppers and the like....in his book ham was a veggie.

In a TOEFL writing class, I gave my students the topic "Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Why? Electric fans are dangerous." Out of the ten students, only one disagreed.
