Has anyone here worked for the English Village in Paju? I've been offered a teaching job there, but as I normally try to immerse myself in a country I'm living in, it sounds pretty awful! The reason I'm tempted is that the whole point of this year in Korea is to pay off debts, and the English Village pays more. If you're working there, or know someone, perhaps you could let me know what it's really like? Do you get your own studio flat as on the EPIK programme? How many hours do you realistically work? Are the employers fair and approachable?

Thanks!

I've heard few positive things about working in an English village...

Yes, it sounds a bit strange to me too!

2.4 million, compared to the 2.1 I'm expecting from the normal school I'm being interviewed for.

These gentlemen work(ed) in Paju English Village, and describe the experience & adjoining town (Geumchon) quite expertly: http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=QjBfy_HVoSM

Mostly theatre majors, dorm-room style apartments, most of the community is really, really tight, do everything together. It really depends on what you're looking for - Their job is to put on english language shows and plays for students. Less teaching, more actual 'edutaining'.

Private apartments, no roomies.

A few poster on Dave's can tell you everything you need to know about EV based on 1 to 4 hours experience visiting, or less.

It is not a place to learn English, its a place to get the kids excited about learning English.

The one day program people do lots of entertainment, while the 2 week program people do more subject area teaching. I taught Science while I was there and had a great time.

My comment was based largely on the information I've received from people who've worked there, but okay, I stand corrected about the teaching, I wasn't aware that there were more in depth programs available for the students.

There is a job hierarchy here in Korea where ESL teaching is concerned much as there is anywhere else in the world. The English Village jobs are the ass end of the bad end of the job hierarchy, the butt of all jokes personal and professional.

Personally, if I were interviewing someone back in N. American and they had an English Village job on their resume, I'd probably give them a pass. If they were naive enough to actually find out in advance that they were getting screwed, I wouldn't want them representing my company.

You can do a lot better than English Village........and you can get the same salary elsewhere despite what they advertise. I know plenty of newbies starting on 2.3 minimum. All the hagwons low ball you at 2.1.......I wish people would stop accepting low salaries, that`s why salaries have hardly changed in years. Even if an adverts says 2.1.....ask for 2.4 and you can get that or at least 2.3 (minimum) easily if you play hardball.

Mick,

I visited once a couple of years ago and found it pretty strange as well. Glad I'm not the only one that thought that.
