I need an excuse to get out of going to dinner at the house of one of the mother assistants from my winter camp.

She invited me last week and told me to text her on Monday to get the details. I was taken by surprise and didn't have an excuse prepared. I believe my response was "Err OK, I don't think I have plans".

I don't want to to go, I want to waste my day off sitting in my underwear. I can't remember her name either. Then I have to buy a gift, and I have no clue what that should be or what will be open where I might buy such a gift.

Would it be a major insult not to go? I need a decent excuse. She lives nearby but I am quite prepared not to leave my flat if it means avoiding it.

Any suggestions?

Drink lots of beer, then phone her up and say that you are drunk, tired and can't go.

"My AIDS is flaring up again. Sorry."

Put an alka seltzer tablet in your mouth. Make sure foam is coming out. Tell her you have to go to the doctor to check if you have mad cow disease.

"The kimchi chiagae I ate last night has given me gas/diarrhea."

Conference call with the family, they're waking up extra early. Tax time is coming and you need to talk about how you're going to file.

I had someone call bullshit on me once for that, so I brought my tax envelope to my next bar meetup. After I explained the differences between a tax deduction and a tax credit, they got bored and let me go back to my conference call.

text message saying you won't be able to make, state in the text that you're sorry, and wish her a happy new year

then turn the ringer off your phone

no need for excuses

if asked next week just say you weren't up to it and be positive, no negativity of tone, just a matter of fact approach, thank her again for the invite though... then change the subject

it is as easy as that

how you present yourself is key: be firm yet considerate

Thank you VanIslander, I will try this. I am going to try and come up with an excuse though too, just in case. I'm currently working on a belter of one.

* You have a terrible toothache and must go (/already went) to xxx hospital to see an ER dentist.

* Your sister is suddenly in Seoul (surprise visit, she is on business). You don't have her schedule yet, but should clear your own for her.

* A close friend of yours is going through a personal crisis and has asked for your help.

* You've met the most amazing and beautiful woman, "She asked me out for dinner at that same time!"

* "A past student of mine is in the hospital and the student's mom asked me to be there for him."

* "I'd love to come, but I forgot when I first told you that I must attend a birthday party. I'm sorry."

You are the subject of an international man hunt in a kiddie porn case and you want to lay low until it blows over. Laughing

I'm using this one if she asks. I do have a friend going through personal crisis, although they haven't asked for my help.

These options don't exclude each other.

You've already had enough suggestions of how to weasel out. How about going? Unless you're the darling of the mothers' club and are snowed under with invitations, it might be a strange enough of an experience to justify the hassle.

You can take some of those attractively packaged fruits you see in the supermarket as a gift.

Make sure you have things ready for the next time. It's best to nip these in the bud. I enjoy hospitality, but sometimes the man-handling foreigners receive is a bit much. Wink
