Anyone have any idea on the upcoming playoff schedule?

The regular season in over and both Anyang and High1 did pretty well. I assume there will be some game sin Korea.

In looking at the site I noticed they played a game in Mokdong tonight. I didnt think they played games in Seoul.

Most of the players seem to be from the local universities, what is teh minor hockey system here like..?

not sure what the playoff schedule is like...

the hockey system here is school based not club based. there's a small middle school league, a small high school league and a small univeristy league. once they graduate univeristy they try to get on with a pro team.

the big university game is when yonsei plays korea university during the festivals. apart from that, not much else.

the kids that are on the middle school teams get recruited by the high school teams. the HS guys get recruited by the unis. rarely does a kid who's not in the system get a chance to crack a team. it's a elitist sport here.

umm...actually....

Anyang and Kangwon-Do both have a club in the Asia Hockey League along with 4 Japanese clubs and a Chinese club. Anyang is first going into the playoffs. www.alhockey.com

Kangwon finished 5th and has to play a Japanese team in Japan first in order to advance. Anyang's first series is in the semis, they are at home and the first game is Feb.24th.

I'd put it on par with QMJHL maybe AHL. Some NHLers come here on the way up/down.

Laughing Laughing I have watched about 15-20 games in the Asian League over the last five winters and have seen many more AHL games and some more from the Q as well as hundreds from the Q's western equivalent WHL and let me say: THERE'S NO WAY IN HELL THE LEVEL IS ANYWHERE CLOSE.

It would be 52-0 if an AHL or Q team played Anyang or the Ice Bucks or any of the AL teams. The third tier ECHL is even faster and much more skilled. NCAA tier-two college hockey is better, though I've seen some games between lesser colleges in Texas that would be competitive. High school hockey in Minnesota is much better. The women's Olympic teams for Canada and the U.S. would beat them, though they'd have a chance against any other women's team. My hometown of Kamloops, B.C. hosts an International Bantam (13-14 year olds) tourney every year, and let me say, the best of the best 13-14 year olds would win against the Asian league: the passing, speed, shooting and goaltending are quicker at least.

For a paycheque and some coaching experience (Esa Tikkanen), for one last chance to play (Claude Lemieux), yeah.

Vanislander if that were true then the foreigners on the teams would be absolutely dominating the league, in fact they're not.
Halla has a couple players who were NHL prospects even had a game or two in the NHL. So someone there considered them to be a pretty high level of play. If the overall level of play was less than bantam these guys would be running around scoring 20 goals a game. The chinese team which has a much heavier foreign influence (being directly sponsored by the Sharks including staff and players, and being allowed to have 7 foreigners on the team) would be the #1 team. Heck the chinese goalie is a Canadian who has played for team Canada, played in the NHL (75ish games) and AHL. Were the level so low, he should have 20 shutouts this season. They've only got 5 wins.

I went to 6 home games this year and found the level of play to be sufficient. It wasn't amazing, but at the same time I saw a handful of pretty amazing stops by the halla goalie, and I've seen some forwards, locals and foreigners making some pretty plays. Its not remotely as dire as you've painted.

As for the paycheques, I doubt they're here for that. the league is small. these guys aren't being drowned in money.

The level's not as low as some on here say it is.

If it were, then guys like Prpic (who is still youngish and played for the Maple Leafs) would destroy it. The two Japanese teams, paper cranes and prince rabbits can hold their own and Anyang's 1 and 2 lines can hold their own too.

The one season I haven't gone to see the Anyang Halla play and they're actually WINNING??

That was part of the fun of going to Halla games was watching them lose spectacularly.

Apparently Prpic (how the hell do you pronounce his last name) is a goon.
He dominated in the penalty minutes category.

Got his team wrong...he was drafted by the Bruins, it was a different guy that played for the leafs. Anyways, he's a really nice guy.

I'm sure he is, most players are, but on the ice he appears to be a goon. I saw him play a couple games here. I still don't know how to pronounce his last name..
