|
|
I remember when I got my physical in Korea and did the x rays. They did all the x rays looked at them for about 15 seconds and said "it's ok".
I thought it was pointless.
I'm thinking about going back to Korea, and I would really like to skip the x rays this time aorund. Is there a way they would let me do that? I don't even eat microwaved food, so why would I want to basically shoot my body with a radiation gun for no reason?
What are they even checking for anyway? Are they checking to see if I broke a bunch of bones and somehow didn't notice? It seems stupid.
And for long-timers in Korea, do you just keep on getting x rays every year? Very unhealthy. |

| The medical exam after you enter from anohter country is now compulsory every time with a new visa. You need to pass this to get your ARC. The x-ray if mainly looking for TB |

| They are checking for TB. They require the same x-rays, for the same reason, before a person takes a teaching position in many states. |

| How much do these medical exams cost? Do we have to pay for them ourselves or is it the responsibility of the employer? |

| With the national insurance copay it cost 54,000w this year as I recall. This is the total physical not just the x-rays. |

If you are renewing at public school they are free. Just talk to the school nurse. If you're a first timer you'll have to pay. Prices vary from hospital to hospital. The free public school test usually takes a few weeks to get back.
You could of course try and negotiate it into a contract should you be working for a hagwon or private school. |

I just got one, it was 70,000w. It might vary from hospital to hospital, but this was a larger one in Gwangmyong City. |

I got one the other day and it cost 50,000. They were trying to get me to do a stool sample too. I just said no thanks until they gave up. It's not necessary for visa. A little paranoid about intestinal parasites now. |

| Get it done at our local public heath center, it only costs 1,500 won. I was in and out in about 15 minutes. Easy. |

They were going to steal the stool sample and put it in their kimchi for extra flavor. |

| Why do so many teachers ask this question using "have to?" It's a great benefit that we get a free comprehensive medical check. The drug test is a bummer if you're a drug user, but then again, if you're an adult drug user beyond your "experimenting" years, you're a bummer in general. Some of my morbidly obese co-workers argued that this was an invasion of their privacy and feared they would be fired if medical problems were found. I think that if you're fired for serious health problems due to obesity, you have bigger problems than finding a new job in Korea. |

Were they fired? I have been upfront about all my medical problems, but this is a worry to me as well. |
