Unless you're one of the very small percentage of people who have legitimate thyroid problems,the rule to follow is:calories in should be less than calories out on any given day.
This amazing formula makes it IMPOSSIBLE to gain weight.
Combined with daily exercise,(calorie in<calorie out) will make you lose weight.
Don't go for dangerous operations and other questionable quick fixes.
Try this formula for a few months and tell us what happens.
It isn't easy but then again,think of the alternatives.
Do you want to spend a fortune to get your stomach clamped off? |

I know that everyone has already done the whole song and dance about eating better and exercising more but there are a few reasons which may (or may not) make it seem like a more appealing option.
First of all, when you diet (or limit your food intake) your body's metabolism slows down naturally. If there is less to digest, your body doesn't have to work as hard. Having this type of procedure can negatively affect your body's ability to cope with food long term. It has shown positive results (quickly, and short term) but the repercussions for the long term will be worse than your current situation.
So, you get the band put on (or you diet, whatever) and your body slows its pace down for however long that is. By starving yourself, your body has now trained itself to "store" every possible chance it gets. Once you remove the band (or get to a weight that you're happy with) and start eating normally again, your body can't handle a regular caloric intake and starts storing fats for the next time you are mean and starve it.
If you are looking for a quick fix, then this isn't going to help you. But if you are looking for a way to get the weight off and keep it off, you need to consider some other options. If feeling full is a positive feeling for you, don't change the amount you eat. Change WHAT you eat. Eat a large salad before you even think about having anything else, and top it with tuna/chicken/flax seeds/almonds or anything that is high in protein. That way you will feel full, but not of stuff that your body is going to move to your hips.
Some other simple things to consider are just replacing things that you already eat with healthier options. STAY away from white rice, white pasta and white bread, they're essentially sugars and don't have that much nutritional value. Find some brown rice, whole wheat bread and pasta. Cut out juices and soda (and instead have water) and you will notice a difference without even DOING anything. Invest in a blender and always keep fresh fruit/yogurt around if you are like me and need your sweet fix. Even something as simple as squeezing fresh lemon into your water will help (as it cuts lipid molecules so that your body stores less of them).
I know a lot of people say you can walk off your weight, but most people think that walking around a shopping mall is enough to do that. In order for it to be effective for you, you have to be physically stretching each leg to push you further (or faster). You should feel the muscles in your legs working after about 2-3 minutes.
As a lot of other people have said, its really not necessary to undergo such an extreme surgery (and think of all the money you'll save!!). I suggest finding an exercise buddy so that you won't make excuses not to go. Typically, your weight gain rate will be comparable to your weight loss rate. So if you lose weight slowly and steadily, it will stay off longer than if you crash diet and lose it all in a matter of months. You have to make the choice. Good luck to you! |

So, any old doctor will prescribe that Xenicol stuff to you if you ask for it?
I forgot where the thread was, but someone wrote about an oriental medicine doc doing acupuncture and giving tonics to drink...does anyone know anything about this? It really interested me because I was trying to figure out what herbs the doc would give for weight loss and I couldn't think of any. |

It seems, literally, every week I read about some new benefit of excersise. Excersise makes me happy, and I'm really clueless why people would opt for a surgery instead of simple excersise. I've never, ever regretted going to the gym.
If you start cooking for yourself, eating lean meats and vegetables simply prepared, you'll quickly lose weight.
I don't eat pizza and Mcdonalds any more, I eat shrimp with brocoli and red peppers, chicken breast with mushrooms and kale, etc. Healthy food tastes better, believe me. A Big mac is a soft, bland mushy thing of fat.
A heavy carb meal with a lot of white bread makes me feel listless and tired.

I know you may not want to hear it but one way of fighting the depression and raising your self esteem is exercise and taking up a sport. It isn't easy to start of from having a sedentary lifestyle to an active one but it works if you give it a fair chance and don't give up. Two good videos to watch for inspiration.

Dieting is tough - but one thing to have is a goal, a vision and once people see you getting to your goal weight - they are always very encouraging! Especially in this country - bad thing - they tell you that you are fat - good thing - once you start losing weight they aren't slow to tell you either - take advantage! |
This is a really good post. I remember sitting in the doctor's office in the US and being told to try harder. It made me so frustrated, but I just dealt with it and continued being fat for probably 4 more years. Then I moved over here and the drinking, smoking, and eating got a bit too intense: 420 lbs intense. I didn't take my vices as symptons of depression, anxiety, or general unhappiness, but they were.
3 months after moving to China I had enough and have been working past it since: 6'1 and 215 lbs now.
a few things:
1. As frustrated as I was at the doctor for telling me to work harder, she was right. You can do this without the surgery.
2. Bundangbabo's info is good, check into it.
3. Feel free to PM me for support or ideas. I have some nutrition files and advice to get you started with knowledge.

EXCELLENT DRILLS! In losing 205lbs (14st 7lbs) well done mate! To lose that much weight takes some doing and a lot of hard work and mental toughness - I take my hat off to you! Congratulations - I bet life is a whole lot better eh?

It seems some people are more prone to gain weight off each pound of food consumed while others don't gain 1 gram from it. It also seems each individuals body strives to maintain a weight and size, but this is often too big to be healthy so we want to lose weight.
I feel fat having a BMI of only 28 and am classified as over weight, but hardly overweight compared to those who really can claim to be over weight. I've been working out 1.5 hours 6 days a week for 3 months, but don't lose weight, because my hunger ensures I eat to maintain 90 kg. I couldn't imagine having a BMI of 30 or 40 something. If I were I might travel to Thailand for this surgery because I don't know how a small fist sized heart can survive very long with the work of pumping blood through a body well over 100 kg in weight. For me, it means I need to further cut back on all foods and simply be a little more hungry, because I'm just slightly too hungry for my own good.
If you're seeking any sort of surgery, you can get it in Thailand at a discounted price for high quality service. Believe it or not, Thailand has 1st world medical abilities that even surpass developed Korea's health care and is more accessible than in your Western country were you have to wait weeks or months for service. The only comparisons are technology, speaking some English, and understanding your wants and needs like people at home might. I feel my Korean health insurance is a waste of money as health care really isn't very accessible for me here like it is in Thailand and I found the quality of Korean health care very poor and lacking credibility and thoroughness. Thailand is very good with health care, dentistry, and pharmaceutical at doing what the Americans invent. Excellent cheap accessible health care is one reason older expats love living in Thailand.
There is a great deal of medical tourism. I was amazed at how good of a job they do in dentistry. I found they are more competent and much cheaper than the Americans or Koreans at doing what the Americans invented. Many people all over the world travel to Thailand for expensive surgeries and dentistry which end up saving more money than the cost of a trip and end up enjoying the trip too. Thailand does perform some really weird questionable surgeries, but you don't have to worry about that nor does that fact effect your situation. And the Thai health care providers usually speak enough English too and better understand your needs and wants better than people in Korea or China ever would. The slogan, "Amazing Thailand," does actually fit the country and it's people. Check it out if you're looking to get something done. |

Korea is the best place to get in shape. Walk, walk, walk. Take the stairs at the subway, walk around your 'hood. Eat right and walk and you should see a change. At least 30 minutes per day and get your heart rate up. Don't exhaust yourself but get some sweat on the brow. Best of luck in the new year! |

If you want excersises that will really cut weight (not build muscle, they will cut weight fast), plyometrics.

You probably shouldn't just start this, or start slow, if you're not experienced in the gym. However, I've been trying to gain weight, and I do use plyo, and I cannot gain weight, no matter what I eat. This is hard work but if you do the excersises you will be at 18/19 bmi within a couple months. You're supposed to be able to squat 60 percent of your body weight beforing doing them.

lap band surgery is available at Catholic Sungmo Hospital in Youido, close to Daebang station off the dark blue line 1. The doctor is Dr Lee Hong chun, worked in the states, speaks fluent english. the cost was $8,000.00 or 8 million won (cant remember which) a year ago.
