I don't know if the left/right dichotomy really fits well. As for me, the closest I'd be is economically conservative and socially liberal.

Tough question...I'd say centrist that leans left, but occassionally goes right as well.

The problem with the question, is if you state you are one, then that means you stand 100% all issues aligned with that 'statement', and then you are put on the defensive for a multitude of things you might feel the opposite about.

Social issues, I am not passionate about many social issues, but it does bother me when people want to RESTRICT things socially....so that might make me a bit liberal with it. On the other hand, some things I wouldn't mind being a bit restricted (easily attainable assault weapons readily and easily available across 1000s of gun shows all across America with zero restriction on who gets them, for example). Case by case basis. As a general rule though, 'let freedom ring'.

Economically though, I tend to lean very conservative. I often get in trouble where most so-called 'economic conservatives' favor massive military spending...and I am strongly in favor of reigning that in significantly as well.

I fall all over the map...I wish drug enforcement would wipe out METH like they did with Qualuudes. Meth is an easy drug to wipe off the face of the planet, and I'm a bit frustrated the U.S. government seems to favor pharmeucitical profits over the health of U.S. communities and families. However, other drugs, I wouldn't mind seeing decriminalizing for drug users.

The list goes on and on.

Don't you mean "youths" ? Or "immigrants" ? or "proponent of higher taxes" ? or 'striking government employees"?

COnsider me a right-leaning Libertarian! (Wherever THAT falls in your spectrum) Whatever SOuth Park says, that's me! (except for sniffing my own farts, but I don't live in San Fran)

Left-right only works if you're an American and happen to be a believer in the two political parties. For the rest of the world, the spectrum is 3 dimensional, but most Americans generally do not understand that, nor are they capable of seeing anything but in black and white terms.

Did someone teach you to hold this view or did you come up with it on your own?

Just curious, because it sounds like bullshit to me. Then again, I'm American and therefore only see things as being either 'bullshit' or 'not bullshit'.

I agree that the left/right divide doesn't really apply for most political beliefs. I identify as libertarian which generally results in extremely right-wing fiscal perspectives and extremely left-wing social perspectives, so I don't really identify anywhere on the scale. I find those 'political grid' quizzes fairly accurate, but even those aren't perfect.

Before I can answer, I need to know if this is an American poll, a British poll, or a Swedish poll.

Even is a multiparty system, the spectrum still runs from left to right. Take Canada as an example...

NDP BQ Liberal Conservative

Left to right, and I do not think there are too many PoliSci profs who would dispute my characterization of the parties there.

And yes, there are instances where individuals or factions within parties may buck a general trend. For example, the NDP is left-wing, but a lot of its rural members have opposed tighter gun-control legislation. But that sort of thing happens in the US as well, eg. you've got pro-choice Republicans, anti-abortion Democrats.

The terminology of the traditional left/right spectrum originated in the early years of the French Revolution. Poli sci books of all of the 19th and most of the 20th Century use the traditional terms.

Yes precisely. Few people fit in neat boxes.

I ticked "far-left".

I identify with communism, socialism, some aspects of anarchism, anything broadly anti-capitalist is worthy of support.

But really, placing ideologies on a spectrum is a problematic way to measure.
