The 4 Course Horse (Cheju-do)
Course 1: Raw strips (I cook my food, didn't try it)
Course 2: Intestines (probably the worst thing I've ever eaten)
Course 3: Grilled (awesome!!)
Course 4: Sujebi, broth made from boiling horse bones and other bits (pretty tasty) |

Yet another reason for me to visit Cheju Do!
I ate horse meat when I was studying in France and loved it. Much better than beef. |

for a friend's going away party, our taekwondo do-jang was going out for dinner. she was asked three times where she wanted to eat, and she always asked for the rice places... erm. can't remember. rice, with greens to wrap it up in, and all sorts of side dishes, but very little meat. sambap?
because, see, she's a vegetarian. and since it's a religious thing, she can't eat shellfish without feeling sinful.
where do we go? a fish restaurant. like, anything that moves in salt water restaurant. some sort of noodles, with a fish completely cooked--insides and all. and several types of shellfish. all marinated in a lovely red broth. had it been coagulated blood, i think i would have been ok.
the three western wimps immediately ordered sides of rice. i then ate intestines; surprisingly good. nice texture, mild taste. i gave up on the brain though; it was so chewy, and i didn't have the guts (haha) to chomp down.
especially when the third westerner assured me that warmy gooey would gush all around my mouth. ick.
i have a can of boontegi in my cupboard. i'm thinking of hanging it on the wall. |

Wow there is horse meat in Cheju? As a joke I mentioned eating horse a few times with the kids, though I never have. They seemed surprised that some people do. I've mentioned eating rabbit back in my home province of Newfoundland. Most kids thought that was bad. Only recently I've noticed the "Tokki tong" (rabbit soup) signs around here in Yongin. Had not seen them in Seoul or elsewhere.
As a side remark, even after between 4-5 years in Korea I still don't quite understand what they eat. It seems so limited. One aisle devoted to "ramyon", another to cans of tuna, in the local stores. Sometimes you see what they buy and go yikes! Of course that means our diets are limited too. I guess I eat about 5 or 6 things mainly over and over, and occasionally go to a good restaurant for something else. |

Had sea snake stew for lunch. Not fun eating while trying not to choke on tiny, sharp-as-hell bones (I always assumed sea snakes didn't even have bones!).
I believe I've had everything there is to be had, save perhaps saram gogi
