Thailand newbies throw caution to the wind and have comedic level of naivety. I'd hang out with a Thailand newbie over a Thailand vet any day of the week.

Agreed, a lot of the "vets" think they're tough b/c they can "survive" in so-called exotic Thailand and mutter a few Thai phrases. I met a lot of these d-bags on my first (and probably last) time in Thailand.

I wouldn't want to hang out with either one. The newbie will think Bangkok is all there is to Thailand, and if that experience sucks for him, then Thailand be damned for all eternity. The vet will try to hold you enthralled because of his 'vast knowledge' and try to make you feel as though you are dead in the water without him. He may not know jack about teaching the present perfect progressive tense, but he knows exactly which bus to take to that watering hole downtown in Sukhumvit, damnit! That, in his mind, will make him the authority over you.

The ones who won't cross the street without checking their Lonely Planet guide first.

Who the hell bargains for stuff? Newbies do that's about it.

I suppose I never have to visit tourist hell though ad bargain over Chang T-shirts or CDs.

Well, I was in Phuket for the month of January and could tell the beach newbies by how pale they were; white as a ghost compared to the beach veterans.

They fall for one of those gem scams.

A guy picks up a Thai girl from a beer bar and is surprised when she asks for money the next day.

Buying drugs on walking street and having to fork out all your cash to pay off a bribe to the police.

Finding out she is a he in the shower.

Renting a room on Kho Sarn road and being shocked when you can't bring any guests into your room.(Getting shocked by the post nuclear cockroaches)

Getting pickpocketed at the entrance to Nana Plaza.

Making posts like this.

Those are pretty good. Let me add one that could top them all:

The guy who screams "Stop that, you son of a bitch!" when he gets a water squirter full to the face during the April water festival (SongKran) is definitely a newbie. Actually, he's a dumbass who hasn't done his homework and researched Thailand's holidays.

F-ck songkran. What a worthless excuse for a holiday. Getting sprayed or drenched with dubious water (or that baby powder crap they put in it) while wearing business attire and carrying a pricey cell phone is not my idea of fun. If I gotta be in the country I just stay in my room and order food-by-phone.

Heh, exactly. I've actually seen backpackers try to ask for a discount for bottled water and grub from 7-11 Laughing

I never haggle. I either know the price (and just hand them the cash without debate) or I just don't buy it.

Actually answsers the question 'Where you go?'.

Can't find the official taxi-meter queue at the airport.

Thinks the girl coming up to him at the bar is actually interested in a conversation.

I don't know about them being newbie or not but I fucking hate the "real traveller" idiots. The ones that think they are getting off the beaten path and seeing the 'real' Thailand or wherever. They bitch about other tourists and somehow think that their experience is more authentic than others. These people can be found in the KSR area, it can't get more authentic or 'real' than that!
