So I modded my (American) Wii today and bought some burned games. When I brought them home, some of them won't work without updating my Wii. The thing in common is they are all Nintendo first party games: Mario Galaxy, Super Paper Mario, and Metriod Prime 3. These are all games that I really want to play, so I'm sorely tempted to allow them to update my Wii...but I've heard this will brick the Wii. Is this the case?

The third party games I bought all play fine...and two first party games I bought work fine too: Zelda and Mario Kart.

Has anyone dealt with this problem before?

What's your current region? Which chip are you using?

Hmm honestly I don't know. It's an American Wii which I bought in 2006, right after the launch. I had it chipped in Yongsan yesterday, but I don't know what chip they put in it.

Do you have a dvd burner? If so, download the games you want from the internet.. download a N.A version of any of the games you want... you can update with those games no problem.. the problem comes when you update an american wii with an European or Japanese update. It is impossible to brick your machine with a burned game of your region.

How about a Korean Wii modded here? Will it only play Korean games or will it play any games?

Thanks skconqueror, that is extremely helpful. My new problem is that I'm not sure if my computer can burn DVD's (I bought it used and don't remember what kind of DVD drive it is). When I go to the device manager it has a CD-RW drive and it has a DVD drive but I can't find a DVD-RW drive. Does it need a specific DVD-RW drive to burn DVD's, or can I use the CD-RW drive to burn a DVD?

I feel a little retarded here asking this, but I haven't burnt a disc of any sort since I got my iPod 5 years ago so I'm really unsure of the current methodology.

It will play any games.. BUT you can only update the software on the machine with a Korean game.. doing so with any other game would cause a semi or full brick (depending on the update)

What are the updates for? Are they absolutely necessary?

They are necessary to play the newer games.. here is a list of the things they upgraded.

I'm really thinking about picking up a Wii later this week in Yongsan. Would need to chip it to be able to play games in English.

For those who have done it... do the games work perfectly?

And another big concern... I want to be able to play Gamecube games, too. I know I'd need controllers, etc... but the Korean Wii doesn't natively support Gamecube as it never came out here. With a modchip, will burned Gamecube games work, even on a Korean Wii? (I know they work on other countries' Wii systems.)

Wondering if anyone has tried connecting their modded Wii (chipped/homebrew) to the internet? If so, how has it been working out. Is the system software still at 3.3k? Any chance of bricking? Online play ok?

Cheers.

Make sure you specify when you get the system chipped that you want to be able to play Gamecube games. Since the system technically doesn't support Gamecube games they need to install a loading frontend (Gecko loader seems to be the one of choice).

Burned Gamecube games of any region play perfectly on my Korean machine. If you want PAL games to play in color you will need component cables (same goes for regular Wii games). The only hitch is the Korean Wii software doesn't let you manage your Gamecube memory card from the menu. You'll never be deleting your save games, so buy a huge ass memory card. A 256mb card will save more GC games than I'll ever play and costs about 14'000won (which I found out about after they sold me a tiny-ass GC memory card for nearly the same price when I bought the system [59 "blocks" as opposed to 4083 "blocks" on a 256mb chip] jerks).

I occasionally bang out a few games of Tiger Woods online, no problems.
I don't remember what my firmware is set on, but for the games I'm playing (a little of everything for twenty minutes) the online play works fine.

Thanks for the info!

One more question for you, or anyone else.

I know it's possible to brick the Wii if I use a newer game from a different region and it updates with the wrong region. So... do I have to go download a new Korean game, run it once to update things, and then I can play a US game? Or does it update online automatically? Or... what?

I've been into DS for a year now with the R4 and it's really simple. Wii sounds more complicated... doable, but more complicated. I'm kinda afraid of bricking my new console or just not being able to play any decent games.
