I just got another email from Air Canada. They're having a genuine sale, but only for another 24 hours. 1 way ticket from Calgary to Seoul is $514 if you buy it at least a month ahead, round trip $770ish (+ taxes and surcharges)
What I noticed comparing the prices was that the fuel surcharge was less on round trip ticket.

That is right. It apparently costs less fuel for me to fly 14 hours twice than once.

A 1 way ticket had a fuel surcharge of $130
a round trip ticket has a fuel surcharge of $101.58

I might understand them reducing the fair on the round trip ticket as an incentive to fly both ways with them, but a fuel surcharge is supposed to cover the actual cost of fuel isn't it?

Air Canada has interesting rates.

I flew on them from Seoul to Vancouver, then to Seattle a month ago. The total cost was US$508. This was a wednesday. Every other day of the week, after this date, and the price went up to at least US$800. In other words, I lucked out, not sure how.

Their rates are all over the place sure. But to me this wreaks of something almost criminal. Claiming a charge is to cover the cost of fuel and it costs only 38% of the price to provide fuel for someone on a round trip as it does for someone on a one way?

Fuel charges and other taxes should be beyond the regular fair and not remotely effected by whether or not someone is taking a round trip or one way. Except in the case that you might get an additional airport fee for coming back.

So what do you expect anyone of us on this forum to do about it?

I think you're complaining at the wrong place.

What does anyone expect anyone on this forum to do, but it doesn't stop the non-stop complaining about something here. I was doing a couple of things:

Pointing this out to people who are obviously travelers - maybe they would complain about it the next time they made a purchase

hoping other people might comment on it - perhaps there is some logical explanation but other than magic, I can't think of one

Perhaps start a discussion about whether or not other airlines do this same thing.

etc..etc... this is a discussion forum about travel, this is an odd/interesting/bad thing I noticed about travel and brought it up for discussion.
