That's right! At the schol where I work they were told a couple of days ago that they have two weeks left and then they have to go. They are being replaced by Korean-American teachers. I feel really sorry for the three young women who have lost their jobs. I've only known them for a couple of weeks but they seemed like really nice people. Actually I'm in the teachers' room right now and they still haven't turned up yet. Normally they're already here before I get here. And there is a teaching resource cd that has been shattered into two shards on the desk behind me. The mind boggles.

Fired or not had their contracts renewed?

Our library assistant didn't get her contract renewed on account that our Principal wants males only at the school if possible. Why? Because our school is pleasantly landscaped and the male teachers are expected to perform gardening duties if required.

Shocking really, but there you go.

I'm assuming the male teachers are Koreans. Razz

Because the KA's can do twice the work for the same price. English+Korean teaching. They'll be replacing the burned out KA's that take off in 6 months anyways. The capacity some of these Native Korean teachers have for abuse and overwork is astounding.

It`s a revolving door. Almost the entire staff could change in your tenture there.

Friend worked at the hagwon down the street... after 1 year, he was the ONLY original person left (Korean or foreign). He saw over 15 staff members come and go -- many lasting just a month. Two sued the school over pay issues in that time. One foreigner was deported after a court trial. It was a hellish place to work. Can't believe he stuck it out.

That's the key, right there.

The natives put up with abuse and overwork because they have no choice, at least at government outfits. I've noticed, in my nearly two years here, that transfers are common in SK. Perhaps this is to save face, as no one has time to get tired of anyone else if everyone is shuffled around. Perhaps it's simply people moving up on the ladder. Perhaps it's both.

Whichever it is, not putting up with the abuse and being a problem child (sticking up for one's self) could limit options later when transfer time arrives. And I am talking about the government arranging where people go when they're transferred.

But with Korean teachers, most don't want to leave work within 2 years, if possible. Their work record follows them for life here. We can just skip home and pretend hell never happened.

If Korean teachers are coming and going from a hagwon in 3 months to a year, then it's a pretty good indication that the school is one to be avoided.
