I'll be working for a public school, and I get 4 weeks vacation: the last two weeks of the winter and summer breaks. Does anyone know when these breaks are, specifically?

Also, is there a post somewhere with the korean holidays?

Thanks

Here are the public holidays for 2009.

2009
1 Jan New Year.
25-27 Jan Sollal (Lunar New Year).
1 Mar Independence Movement Day.
1 May Labour Day (not an official public holiday but many companies and financial markets close).
5 May Children's Day.
9 May Buddha's Birthday.
6 Jun Memorial Day.
15 Aug Liberation Day.
2-4 Oct Harvest Moon (Chuseok).
3 Oct National Foundation Day.
25 Dec Christmas Day.

Here is a link to a 2007 schedule someone made for a public school position.

A partial calendar for 2008

My 2009 winter vacation was from Jan 1 to Feb. 5th.

In general, winter vacation is in January and summer vacation is in August.

The dates of winter & summer breaks vary from school to school depending on what each principal decides.

^ Right and you also must consider the camps that your school will want you to teach during the breaks.

Around the middle of March, each teacher, including you, at the public school should receive the school's annual. Two pages of that book are the schedule for the entire school year. You do not need to know any Korean to understand these two pages. The pages are a matrix with every school day during each term listed. Those dates shaded are special days off during the semester. There will be a gap between the semesters. Those gaps are the long vacation between semesters.

Does that mean that you don't actually get 4 weeks holiday at all then?

the thread was started in 2009. Things have changed a bit. Now, in my EPIK contract I get 10 days of winter holiday and 8 days for summer holiday. It's easier to make it longer by factoring in Public Holidays and weekends.

Theres also been a "rumour" that we may be getting unpaid leave during the vacation times for the days we are not actually doing camps, so no more deskwarming. It does make good financial sense but Govt Depts the world over are not renowned for making sound fiscal decisions Smile
