I think Dave's should make a forum just for cities in Korea! That would mean less topics like mine being repeated over and over again.
Anywho.....I'm moving to Yongin next week and wanted to get a little insight into the city. Anybody live there now?..used to?
Stuff like:
-sports (public areas, professional teams)
-night life
-foreigner friendly locations/hang outs
-movies/malls
-trails, hiking, etc.
-spas
-anything else you may find worth mentioning
Thanks in advance. If you live there now, I'd be happy to meet up with expats when I get in the area. I'm 27, social drinker, positive person. |

Oh.....no clue. I guess they're still working on my accomodations. I'll be teaching in giheung-gu (if that helps any). |

I should be in Yongin (maybe by the end of next week), but not stressing out about it too much in that my VIN won't be showing up until this Friday. I"ll be in the Jukjeon dong area. Have no clue. Just hoping there are little places where I can eat at before I go shopping. Am trying to learn the Korean alphabet, but I keep having an excuse or so not to. Sub teaching works as well as the bells and whistles to do with the visa, and I'm putting off learning to read Korean -- which is stupid -- I should be doing this. So that will be my jet experience over there. It will also give me something to do on the flight. I also plan on memorizing my little favorite dishes (about 5) in Hangeul - assuming there is no picture, I can just point and know what I'm getting. Then there is always the surprise dish -- whatever. |

If the Huh? remark was meant to me by the OP, I think a lot of teachers go to Korea having no experience whatsoever in the written or spoken language. That's fine. I do speak and read Mandarin Chinese at a very rudimentary level. In other words, I can be polite and make very little small talk and read what I see to a very small extent. I also read and speak French and Spanish at a higher level. Korean, as I'm finding out is not that tough, but it's just something I've put off. I also think that the plane ride is going to be so long, it's something to occupy my time. Speaking in a conversation mode, I can speak the basics. It's just reading that I have to work on -- and frankly, who the frick cares? I can see this is a board I'm going to abandon once upon landing. The negativity is astounding. But then I said that when I went into Costcos in England and only saw Old El Paso Mexican food products. I did come back. |

Nice rhyme.
The school is in dongbaek, giheung, yongin. I don't know where I'll be staying yet, but I figure it will be somewhere in the vicinity. That's the first time I ever typed vicinity. |

My last post on this thread. Jeff's Cigarettes, whatever your gender, you strike me as a misogynist whack job. I could out cuss you in four different languages if so inclined -- but this is supposed to be somewhat of an educational forum. The original poster was just interested in what Yongin is like. Your little euphymisms, albeit racist, are not particularly amusing. |

I teach in yongin, giheung gu. It's the 'suburbs' by Korean standards, but I think the area is quite nice. There are a lot of schools, stores, movie theaters, and great places to eat. It's about an hour from Seoul. Plus there are some nice mountains and a great river to walk along when the weather is nice. All in all I am quite happy here with the quality of life.
As far as foreign hang outs, there are a ton of us that live one subway stop up at Ori. Starus Officetel is practically a UN Refugee Camp for english teachers in terms of all the foreigners you'll meet. There are bars, coffee shops (a really good one who's name escapes me that roasts its own coffee beans every morning) and plenty of stores, shopping and entertainment. It doesn't really get too rowdy as far as clubs go until you get up to Seohyeon (a few subway stops up from Jukjeon) and even that's a bit more mild than Seoul/Gangnam.
Anways, I've enjoyed the area a lot in the last year and am trying to find a great school in the same area for year two. |

Yongin is famous for Christopher Paul Neil the pedophile having worked there. |
