For someone who's planning a move to Korea, can you tell me how the health care is (such as doctor's visits and prescriptions) and dentistry?
How much do you pay per month for the health insurance in Korea and how much is the co-pay and what do they cover and not cover?
Detailed information would be appreciated.

If you work at a public school then the NHIC coverage (mandatory health care) is about 2.54% of your salary. Doctors visits are 3000-5000 won - same for basic dentistry.
IF you work at a hakwon be prepared to have NO coverage (in spite of the fact that it is required by law and is a contract item). Dr. visits are about 10k won. |

Agreed. I've worked for two hagwons. Always covered. Pension paid. Severance paid. Flights paid. This is becoming the norm, not the exception. Hagwons will, however, cheat you in some manner. It's part of Korean culture. Give with one hand, take with the other. Be prepared to lose a little from either your severance, your pension, your income tax deductions, or all three.
A thoroughly honest Korean businessman, IMHO, doesn't exist. |

| ttompatz you are a wealth of information and I won't argue that. This is my first post even though I've been here for over a year. I'm in my second year with a different hakwon and each have paid into the NHIC program. It's easy to generalize in Korea, but to say what you said is misleading. |

Yes. I've been at the same hakwon for almost three years now, and I've always had my basic health ins. / dental / pension paid up, etc...
No cheating here.
Anyways, I'm in the middle of some pretty extensive dental work right now, and tho I've heard the horror stories, and I'm traditionally a big baby (under the drill) I'm finding these appointments to be less than stressful or even painful in any way.
The equipment is high-tech, the dental staff is professional...every procedure has been explained to me thoroughly (every question answered) and there's a pc screen in front of my chair at all times with my x-ray on it. Most of all, NO PAIN!! The anasthetic they use on me seems to work perfectly. |
