I have no idea why Irish people would want to come to Korea to earn the equivalent of 270 euros a week when the dole in Ireland is 204 euros a week. You're only getting 66 euros more and having to come halfway across the world to do it.

I think the dole will also pay for your accomodation if you can't pay so don't tell me about free apartment.

The minimum wage in Ireland is 8 euros 65 cents. That's the minimum wage! I'm sure if you get a halfway decent job you could easily earn twice that.

I guess most Irish here must be backpackers earning pocket money and seeing the world. This really is pocket money!

It's all about "cost of living". Comparing salaries isn't accurate.

My mom is horrified that my salary is about $1,300USD.

But when I order dinner delivered to my house, it's about $3USD (5,000w). A taxi would be about $1.5USD. A bus ride is less than $1.

I make less than I would back home, but I end up saving more!

And its not always about making money. If I stayed home I would be making 3 times what i make here in a month and still be saving double what I do here even with the cost of living differential. But i wanted a different experience and the job I was in made me extremely unhappy. Money isnt everything.

Is that true? When I was on the dole in the UK I got 90 quid a fortnight.

I thought this was going to be a thread about how nobody can understand them.

Having an Irish teacher or a Scottish one is a bit of a laughing matter.

How about an NZ teacher? I think we are equally incomprehinsible. I have purposely cultivated an American tongue therefore I shudder to think what awaits me back home when I open my mouth to utter the witticisms that ultimately follow.

I don't understand why so many canadians go to korea. Canada supposedly has a shortage of manpower. Tons of websites asking for peope to go and work there and simple visa procedures. I actually contemplated moving there but its too cold for me. If you dont mind the cold I guess plenty of jobs to be had in Canada.

for a lot of canadians it is about the thrill of adventure, of moving to a foreign place and then backpacking afterwards across asia. It is common desire amongst university students in Canada to travel after university to Europe, Asia, OZ, NZ before settling down and starting in the real world

plus, pretty much every university campus has a recruiter on it. thats where I first heard about teaching in Korea years ago when I was in first year. It stayed in the back of my mind as something to do. Also, every Canadian now knows at least a friend of a friend who is teaching in South Korea so there is a lot of social networking that goes on as well

No D.D.
This thread is about how Irish people could be as well off back home on the dole. Read it over a couple of times, it should sink in eventually.

Canada has a shortage of skilled manpower. Like the town my parents live in has loads of job openings like doctor, but nothing I ould do. And they pay their doctors crap and overwork them anyway, so even if I WAS a doctor, I sure as *beep* would not go there.
