| The only generalizations that I can think of at the moment that seems to apply to Canadians in general, especially in our public behaviour, is we're apologetic (polite to strangers), provincial-minded (antifederalism), unpretentious (dislike conceited people), protectionist-minded (environment or economy or culture), concerned about health (our greatest heroes: a guy who brought in healthcare funding for all and a guy who lost his leg to cancer and ran across the country to raise awareness of it) and likely to avoid conflict. |

I'll agree with apologetic, provincial and protectionist. But I'd put pretension on a similar level with smug, which we have the market cornered, globally. Canadians are smug as *beep*. Concerned about health, no. Canadians like to drone on about "medicare" only because the Americans have a worse system. Every single OECD nation, less America, has a socialized (to some extent) medical system. It is a public policy decision, not a value, but we've elevated it to a value because of our number one trait: not-American. That is what we wish we were, but aren't.
And I think our American friends who spent time (or who are in Korea) would likely laugh heavily at the suggestion that we're adverse to conflict. I find Canadians to be confrontational, in a passive-aggressive way.
On balance, we're a fine people. Some good, some bad. It is what it is, as our American brothers say. But the regional differences are strong. The Quebecois are a totally different bag, southern Ontario is bizarro land and BC the breakfast cereal province (fully of fruits, nuts and flakes -not that there's anything wrong with being a fruit-). Alberta is WASPy, conservative and generally awesome. Sask and Manitoba still exist, I think. |

They're a bunch of people, some of whom have things in common, some of whom do not, living in a place. Sometimes they do things, and they like to eat food. As far as I know, they think about things, and tend to talk to other people.
I think that's a fairly accurate description. |

Interesting. How do you suppose we are such a success compared to Russia? The Russian list must be much worse.... |

I imagine "the world" mostly does not see New Zealanders. It probably prefers to focus on "Americans," and that especially according to Graham Greene's "Quiet-American" stereotype -- you know? the one Chuvok so nicely and mindlessly mimics, above. |

No, not at all. I have no socks here. I believe any mod can easily verify that.
This theme amuses me, however, as it occurs and recurs from time to time. I think someone once even accused me of being BLT's sock or vice versa. |
