My employer has never paid taxes, will that be a problem when I leave in a month?

Vague.

Did you mean to say "My employer has never withheld taxes from MY salary"?

If so, it would depend on your nationality and how long you've been here.

Tell us more so we can help ya out here.

Not if your employer always had enough deductions to reduce his taxable income to zero... otherwise you will be arrested at the airport, detained and charged with evasion of K-tax laws. Wink

Yes, I meant they never withheld taxes. I will have been here for 1 year (minus 5 days) when I leave. I'm a US citizen.

Are you an American? People have told me Americans don't pay taxes (or if they do, they get them refunded) for the first two years.

I think the poster asked for your nationality because the laws differ. I believe Canadians pay taxes, for instance.

I wouldn't worry about it. You're exempt from paying anyway. I know a guy who's been working here four years and hasn't had a won withheld in taxes yet.

You're lucky your boss isn't withholding. I was that lucky my first year, and then my school switched the person in HR. In my second year I had taxes withheld. The only way to get the refund is by producing form 6166 from the IRS. I have that, but my school still hasn't filed the proper paperwork to get me my refund. Tomorrow is my last day working at my digs, so if they don't get me my reimbursement (they said they would pay me and then be reimbursed by the NTS), I'll be calling the labor board and tax guys on Monday morning. I wanna get out of here. I don't wanna be dicked around. So yeah, count yourself lucky. Be thankful they're not withholding taxes. I wish I were in that boat.

You are not exempt from paying into the tax system if working in a hagwon. If the school did not take out taxes from your pay then you are ok. If they did take out taxes and never submitted them, then you were cheated out of money. Rolling Eyes

Also, if you make less than a certain amount in a one year period (Something around 18 million won) you're below the taxation line and they won't take anything off your pay...
At least that's how the financial officer at my school (PS) explained it to me when I asked last month why they havn't been taking taxes off my pay...

Don't know if this is true. It depends on what the 'year' is. If it's a calendar year, it is. If it's a tax year, perhaps. Perhaps not. Also, it depends on the right hand knowing what the left hand is up to at all times. I'm leaving my digs in two days, yet my school took taxes out of my January pay. They know I'm leaving, but did it anyway. However, I did get reimbursed on that payment in my February salary jack. Maybe the tax office didn't know about my leaving?

I wish it were cut and dry when it comes to this tax issue. I wish somebody would give us all a straight answer when it comes to withholdings.

Absolutly right... FAR too many gray areas... But TiK (This is Korea) lol...
(In my case, I didn't have tax removed because I only worked August to December in the calander year, so no tax... Not sure about this year yet because I'm working Jan - Aug *shrugs*)
