I'm thinking about accepting a position in Korea. I'd prefer to live in an average sized coastal city like Busan, but I also want to strike a balance so that the cost of living is fairly low. Any ideas? Also I'd love to hear your thoughts about the cheapest places to live in Korea, aside from the obvious rural inland areas...

I have never been there, but have met many(well 3) people that swear Kangnung is the best place to be. On the coast, bit of a city, and a great atmosphere. I think it is a vacation destination for koreans into outdoor sports. Check it out.

Remember, you will fall in love with your first place wherever you go, as long as your job is good. I would concentrate on working conditions more than the location. All cities have their pros and cons, but your job will be where you spend most of your days and will dictate how happy your time in Korea will be.

Good luck.

Just stay away from Jeollanamdo province. Sometimes it is spelled Cholla-namdo. It is nick-named the "Rebel Province" and is usually at odds even with the other provinces. Korea is already famous for its rudeness and ill treatment of any foreigners, and here it is 1000 times worse. Gwangju would be the only exception, as it is a large city with a slightly more open feel. Slightly.
