Just wanted to find out what everyone else does when they play the Korean national anthem at school assemblies, I seem to not know whats the best thing to do, I feel disloyal to my home country if I put my hand on my chest |

I just stand there with my arms to the side, thinking "Wow, I'm lucky that my anthem is a hundred times better than theirs". |

I don't. If you learn the words you can also sing it to the tune of God Save the Queen or Auld Lang Syne - the lyrics match each song. |

I stand, but don't put my hand over my heart, or sing along.
I show respect, but it's their flag/anthem, not mine. |

I stand, but that's it. It's respectful but not like you're being a "traitor" to your own country. |

Last year, when the pervert was working here--before we knew he was a pervert--we had an opening ceremony with the national anthem. The Perv put his hand over his heart and sang along (his wife is Korean). One of the Korean teachers reached over and pulled his hand down. |

Sounds like the other Korean teachers had the right idea about that idiot. |

When I lived in the US I didn't stand up when there was a ceremony that involved the American Pledge of Allegiance. But I don't mind doing it here. I can sing or hum along to Oh Canada, God Save the Queen, or Aegukga and feel afinity, even though I still think the whole idea of national anthems is pretty silly - a kind of absurd blend of late 19th-century European military nationalism and 20th-century American sports culture. |
