I have gotten my documents needed for my Visa, but my recruiter told me once I get the Visa, I would basically be flying out the next day. As excited as I am about going to Korea, I still have packing and loose ends to tie up. Should I wait and send my documents to the consulate once I am ready to go or send them now? I am worried that if I get stamped now, that will be the start of my one year Visa and I don't want to be over my Visa by a week or so because I waited to come. Suggestions? |

Is this an E-2 or another visa?
Are you flying out without a job? If you are, why are you using a specific recruiter? I'm confused.
The whole benefit of recruiters for candidates is generally that they help with the visa process. It doesn't sound like there's any benefit to using your recruiter if he/she isn't helping to coordinate that process.

Winter is ending and if you wait (in terms of months), you'll end up coming during the hot summer months. So, either come now or wait 5-6 months. |

OP,
Your Visa starts the day you ENTER Korea. You have 90 days to get here once your Visa has been issued. Relax. |

No, I have a job set, but just wanted to know when I had to leave once I get the visa. Another poster stated I have 90 days to get there, so that's good. I just didn't want to be rushing to pack but don not want to miss the job either.
Second question: do I have to start teaching as soon as I get to Korea? In my dream world, I would have a week to get my bearings and get my bank acct and utilities and internet going, but from what I read, it seems like off the plane and into the classroom with no moment to get over jet lag. I may sound bad, but honestly, I don't want to start my new job not at my best. |

I'm 99% sure you need an ARC to get a bank account or internet in your own name (some schools start your internet in their name from what I've heard) and won't be able to get one until the medical check has cleared; generally, most people's schools take them to get their medical check.
When my friend went over, she was picked up by her school, shown her apartment, given a day to sleep off jetlag (it was Sunday though), and brought in the next day. She didn't have actual classes until Wednesday, but she was at the school Monday/Tuesday to "train" and meet with her director, etc; she had her medical check that Monday as well. All schools are different, but you can't really get a lot of the things you mention organized without an ARC, which I've heard can take 2-3 weeks. My friend got hers on her third week in Korea so had to live off cash for nearly a month.
So, generally, it might be good to mentally prepare yourself to hit the ground running. Do you have a contact at your school that you can ask "what to expect?"
I've heard that it's good to arrive on late Friday/Saturday because then you generally have some time to recover jet lag. |

Don't dick your new job around if you started the process keep it going fast as possible and make the jump.
Any delay will lose you your job as they are on their schedule not yours. You will not have a week to get adjusted. Actually you need to change the way you think quite quickly or you are not suited for here.
I think your fears about coming are showing up as delay tactics? |

I am not dicking anyone around. I waited two months for my notice of appointment, and I was prompt in sending them everything. All I wanted to know was how much breathing room I would have once I came to Korea. I was not asking for a personal attack and did not deserve one. You are not anyone to tell me how suited I am for anything, so stfu. You don't know me or the way I think, so again, stfu. As for the other people who have given useful answers, thank you for your help. I'm sending the documents today and plan to be in Korea by 3-9-09, assuming the visa returns in time. |

So you have had two months and you are still not ready? Don't be a girl about what I said it wasn't a personal attack.
Just was giving you the facts that you shouldn't delay. Cruel to be kind. |

for your settling in period, try arrive on a friday, it will give you a bit of a chance to recover over the weekend, it's always a good way to sneak in a few days of relaxation.
do you intend arriving march 9th, wow, you aren't giving yourself much time to get packed and get everythin you need, unless of course you have that stuff sorted.
don't take small criticisms to heart either, especially if you are going to use this board for help, at least 3 or 4 answers will be critical, these are not attacks on you, just people telling you exactly how they see it.
good luck in your new job |

What does this have to do with being a girl? Don't be sexist. |

Girls typically have more feelings and respond worse to criticism. |

Stereotypically or empirically? |

You should have been informed at one stage or another of when the school wanted you to come in. Thinking that you have 90 days is completely unrealistic unless the school has informed you otherwise.
School have to stick to their schedules unfortunately. Having a set of classes without a teacher is a major problem and there isn't a substitute system for private schools here.
Also the time that you have upon arrival really depends on when you come in. If you come in while the teacher you are replacing is still there you'll have some leeway on when you start. If you show up after the teacher has left then you'll be starting right away. Arriving on a Friday is a great way to buy some time. Things like setting up your bank account can't start until you receive your Alien Registration Card so you won't need to worry about it when you first arrive and most schools will get Internet hooked up for you if you request it. |
