While I would love to fork over my 20,000 Won and join today's teacher party, which starts waaaay after my school hours, I live really far from my school and just don't want to a) waste the food I prepared for tonight because I had no prior notice about the party, and b) get home really late because of my commute.

How do I... CAN I say no and not cause any hard feelings?

Tell them you are on a diet and cook your own food. Even if you are thin, they will buy this because Koreans who are ultra thin say they are on a diet. I actually like the parties and pay 20k per month also.

You could also just simply say your busy and come up with an excuse.

As for the VB tell them you aren't competitive and don't play team sports.

My school doesn't care, they invite me still to staff events, I either say yes or no.

No mincing about.

Smile, nod, and say "Thank you but no thank you" then change the subject... Koreans get off-track pretty easily when they're trying to figure out what you're asking them lol

Ha, I just got invited to teacher's volleyball at 3. If it was after school I'd definitely think of declining the offer. Now all I can think about is trying to resist the urge to get too involved and accidently spiking the ball straight into my principal's face. (and then possibly shouting "BOOM.... how'd you like 'dem apples!!")

Okay, so this is lame, but I told my co-teacher that my cat was sick and I was worried about her so I wanted to get home as early as possible (I know, I know) and she told me to go home after my last class at 2:15.

I kind of felt really bad about that until a minute ago, when a couple of my meaner students told me that I got older over vacation, and that I now look terrible and fat. I told them it's Korea's fault for having such a nasty winter, but I was happy that they actually used the word "terrible" in a sentence, and now I don't feel so bad about going home early.

Suck thru your teeth then say "Very Difficult". Seriously though if you are good in volleyball, this will give you more respect in the school. I play ever Wednesday, but our volleyball games are during school hours, and beats sitting at my desk reading this board. As for dinner invites, I do them when I feel like it. Saying "no" is ok, but I would try to make it when it is convenient.

Yeah, if volleyball is during school hours that's cool, although any activity that involves solid objects flying at high speeds towards my head is not my thing, but I will take the advice of the posters and just say NO.

I really miss the Wednesday volleyball games with the teachers at school. I started a parents class at volleyball time and volleyball was cancelled.

I don't miss being told foreigners can't play in the inter-school v-ball competition. Needless to say. I didn't and won't attend that particular dinner.
