Why not slavery? It would be more productive, at least. |

Well, is life in a dim concrete cell more humane? |

Dunno. Don't care either way, to be honest.
Just sayin' that's what politicians and human rights groups say. |

Okay. Perhaps they are wrong to say so. |

I guess over the years some people have kinda decided that, yeah. |

That seems like a matter of opinion. Although I would think productive household slavery is more dignified than life as a useless state leech, the point isn't to be more humane, but to be more economical. I think the idea isn't unreasonable. I haven't suggested abducting blacks from Africa. |

Imagine doing that in the US where such a large number of the prison population ARE black. Don't think it would go over very well with the black community. |

I can think of no better punishment for the irreversibly criminal than to turn them into cogs for our benefit. White, black, purple, none, it doesn't matter. They committed a severe offense and we should not let them be a drain on society. I'm 100% behind the slavery proposition. |

Yes. That's how a lot of penal laws work: a few people (the judicial branch) decide on matters of opinion. |

This has been the norm for years.....they work for a pathetically low wage....Have you ever seen a prison movie? Usually they have them working on a variety of tasks or things. I think it's optionally, but it beats boredom... |

On the humane side of things, since that seems to appeal to you people, it would not be a heriditary condition, and I suspect it would also tame and re-integrate criminals more effectively than jail, which we can all agree is uniquely de-humanizing.

I don't claim it's realistic atm, only that it might be better than the current method.

Why is it wrong to enslave criminals? |

I think that 'light labor' could be applicable in many instances. |

In China they use some prisons as factories.
I don't think the word 'slave' would go down well. If the idea was marketed well then it might work. Having a prison population work on car parts for a multi-million profit making manufacturer would be met with opposition from the public. Having the same group work on making uniforms for school children or on community projects etc. might be met differently.
People will change their minds about what is considered acceptable if the economy starts to seriously falter. The prison population in America is embarrassingly large, I think it's a good idea to use them constructively for society, but I don't know what practical measures required and the opposition this would be met with.
Some people will argue that giving jobs to the prison workers is actually taking jobs away from the average Joe Soap on the outside and/or decreasing the competitiveness of Joe Soaps labor skills. |
