My current contract is up on feb 7, however because my school was slack on sending me on my visa run it doesn't expire till march 5.
Now I'm not planning on starting work again until post march 5, do I have to do anything special with immigration when I leave?

Special, like ?
Since your employer sponsors your visa and your visa terminates on February 7, your Visa technically expires on the same date. Well, it doesn't "expire" based on date, but by ending/termination of the contract. You have the standard time to leave the country when that happens. You can get an extension prior to that time, but in a truly legal sense it doesn't matter since you are required to leave the country within one day of an expired visa -- however, in this case you get your 2 weeks from the time it ends. Of course, in a practical sense, probably one out of 10,000 will get anything other than an "okay" at the airport. They don't look at that information, you will simply have a "valid" expiration date related visa at the airport should you wish to travel ... and if you come back and it's expired, then just come in with a visitor visa. Either way you have to get a new visa for your new job.
If that makes sense, and I think it does.
Basically. You have to do nothing special. |

just wondering if I have to get the current boss to notify immigration etc. just in case they think I did a last minute run. So I just hand in my ARC and go then?
I realise I'm going to need another work visa when I get a new job.

No, the technical part of the law is that when your contract is completed, in its entirety the employer does not have to do that 'contact immigration' runaround. When it follows its proper path to completion it isn't done. That's one of those little loopholes with the visa expiration -v- contract end. Basically you are pretty solidly safe with taking it easy after your job ends until you get a new visa, remembering your actual visa expiration date. Since you legally get only 24 hours to depart the country from the actual visa expiration by date. |
