I'm looking to come back to Korea, and have been sending out loads of CVs. One thing that keeps coming up is that my salary expectation is too high. How much am I asking for? 2.4M minimum. That's exactly what I was earning in my last job. I have three years experience, two of which are in Korea. At my last job I was HFT and would have no trouble getting a good ref. Do I need to work on my CV, or are Korean employers trying to offer lower salaries these days? There's no way I'm coming back to Korea for less than 2.4M, especially with the Won being so weak.

This is hilarious. You should accept 1.8M because their business is hurting. I mean, $8 an hour plus a free shoebox is a great deal.
If business is hurting I think they are SOL and folks should high-tail it outta here. |

I was recently contacted by a bunch of different places that were all offering 2.5 to 2.9 M per month. They're paying it. You're just finding a bad selection where you're looking right now. |

The recruiters just know it is easier to find a job at a lower amount than that. They don't want to work very hard, so they're trying to get you to lower your expectations. Just spread your net wide and you'll find something for that amount or better. |

Economics is very simple
You want 2.4, they want to pay 1.8, so no deal.
Keep sending CV's and you might bump into someone who might pay 2.4.
Everyone is aware that America in the last four months has lost over 2.000.000 jobs ....
This means wages will drop, there are enough grads out there that need to pay their bills, even with the current exchange rate .... |

Maybe your Qualifications are higher and being in Korea gives them certainty you are not running away. |

right.
your title though is a totally different issue. if ever a place was a house of cards its korea. ive lived in some pretty nice areas in my life and ive only seen one Bently. in the last 3 months ive seen 2 near where i live. one driving down a narrow street with potholes.
its just a matter of time but the point is, even if this place goes under, you dont have to stay. |

So true. They love to use the line "there are no jobs that pay that much."
I'd increase my asking price to around 2.8 or 2.9 with plane rides paid, et al.
Never compromise. When you sell yourself cheaply, your employer will expect the guy coming behind you to settle for what you're willing to settle for. That guy may be me. |

Personally, I feel that threads like this should never be started. I mean, just what bizzness is it to you what others monthly salaries are?

It is all about the league.
I just got off the phone with an old co-worker (F-2 status) who secured an in-house co. job for 4.5 per month (splits) about 2 months ago and it's swimming. He's happy,...I'm trying to get in....they're selectively hiring a few more. |

I'd imagine it'd depend how many hours you were willing to work for it, but I'm a newbie to Korea (decent English/Ed background) and found many offers in that range. A few schools warned me about the bad economy, the surplus of teachers they were expecting, and suggested I drop my asking price. I didn't. I also specifically looked for schools that seemed more "recession proof." Hard to do from overseas, of course, and I'm not pretending I did a perfect job of it. (We'll see eventually.)
Sure, times are tough everywhere, but with the won low, I think everything cancels each other out. I wouldn't expect people to make a mad dash to Korea and figure there was a greater surplus. Since you've survived Korea before, I'd think you'd be a safer bet, thus much more in demand. |

Well shit. Maybe I'd ask for 3.2. |

I went from 2.0 to 2.4 a couple months ago. There wasn't even a negotiation. I should have asked for more. |

I have never seen a more random, illogical post in my life. Bentlys, potholes, house of cards--this has something to do with being offered 2.4 in a hagwon? WTF? |
