I need to show an English video on Friday. I would like to have it translated and subtitled in Korean. Are there programs that can do this? I experimented with different ways of soft-subbing (creating .srt and .idx files and playing in VLC player) but I can't get the encoding to show properly (shows up as boxes instead of Korean text). Any solutions? Soft or hard subbing OK. Thanks

Did you try changing your non-unicode programs language settings in your Regional and Language Options to Korean?

If you use GOM player, the subtitles should show up perfectly.

Is it difficult to make .srt files?

I played around with the encoding settings but no dice. I tried UTF-8 for the text file and VLC player but it still shows boxes.

The .srt file is easy to make but time consuming. It's just a text file with the list of numbers, the timecode and the subtitle.

I find a temporary solution using iMovie. It will do Korean subtitles, but it's not perfect (can't exactly control length, font size and transitions). If someone knows of an easy to use software for subtitling (either Windows or Mac), I'd appreciate it.

you can use notepad..most subtitle file are nothing but text files. When I watch shows with my friend, the subtitles are always smi format
which is just plain text.
They always show up in media player, media player classic, etc all fine using vobsub.

here is the first bit of some subtitles for scrubs:
Code:
<SAMI>
<HEAD>
<TITLE> Scrubs - 1x00 Pilot </TITLE>
<STYLE TYPE="text/css">
<!--
P { margin-left:4pt; margin-right:4pt; margin-bottom:2pt;
    margin-top:2pt; font-size:12pt; text-align:center;
    font-family:Arial, Sans-serif; font-weight:normal; color:white;
    }
.KRCC { Name:Korean; lang:ko-KR; SAMIType:CC; }
#STDPrn { Name:Standard Print; }
#LargePrn { Name:20pt (Large Print); font-size:28pt; }
#SmallPrn { Name:10pt (Small Print); font-size:12pt; }
-->
</STYLE>
</HEAD>
<BODY>
<SYNC Start=4850><P Class=KRCC>
<SYNC Start=8309><P Class=KRCC>
<i><font color="pink">폭풍, 사이렌, 뭐가 됐든...
<SYNC Start=10985><P Class=KRCC>
<SYNC Start=15384><P Class=KRCC>
<SYNC Start=21381><P Class=KRCC>
<i><font color="pink">그치만, 오늘은 다르다.
<SYNC Start=25431><P Class=KRCC>
<SYNC Start=27601><P Class=KRCC>&nbsp;
<SYNC Start=36965><P Class=KRCC>

the file just ends with
Code:
<SYNC Start=1369905><P Class=KRCC>&nbsp;
</BODY>
</SAMI>

the nbsp is a clear line code. You should put it whenever the subtitle is no longer needed and you're moving on to the next one. The start times are in milliseconds.
