Coming back to Korea soon. Definitely want to invest in a computer this time. Wondered what anyone thought was good to look for and what was a good deal pricewise? I'm from England so I guess taking it back after would be a problem, would it work back in England though? Is a laptop a good idea so it can be sent back to England easier, maybe v.expensive to send normal size computer or would have to sell? Any responses appreciated.

I'm shortly to be there too and am also from the UK. I'm interested. Why do you say taking it back to the UK would be a problem?
No one can really answer the laptop/desktop question for you unless you tell them what you want to do on the machine itself.
More info would be good. |

never done it so i don't really know...
but, i'm guessing if you change the $10 power supply in the desktop or the powerpack (transformer) for the laptop there would be no problehmo.. not real sure on the laptop.. but 99.99999999% sure on the desktop. |

Most computers now you don't even have to change any power supply... just plug 'em in (or buy a $2 prong converter) and you're set to go. They either do it automatically or there's a small switch on the back. |

The power supply problem isn't a problem---the UK uses 220 Volts, same as here. The only thing you will need is a little prongy for the plug-in.
I paid 1.3 MW for a pretty loaded system. Korea is a fairly cheap place for computers, though it's no fire sale. You could check out the Yongsan electronics market in Seoul for a candy store of computers.
You should buy a laptop if you need a laptop. I prefer desktops because they are cheaper, easier to modify, and generally easier on the eyes and hands. One option is to buy a very small slimline or half-height desktop with an LCD monitor. The size and weight shouldn't be a problem for taking home.

What is it with Compaq and monitors? I've seen/heard of 3 other units with the same problem over the past few years.
Always monitor problems. This has to be a very common problem, and I wonder if Compaq cares. |
