Whats the real deal with language exchanges? I've heard lots of people say that they are basically a way for people to hook up and get some action....but im sure there are people that strictly teach each other the language right?

So if I was to arrange one with a korean girl, should i go into it expecting all business....or more...

I've done a few language exchanges. I used it as a way to make friends and break out of my social circle.

None of the people I did the exchange with were strictly intersted in language tutoring. They were also looking to make friends (while learning at the same time).

If you are looking for a boyfriend/girlfriend... then choose a language exchange partner of the opposite gender. If you are looking for friends, choose someone of the same gender.

If you reeeeeally don't want that... there are some free (and paid) classes around Seoul to teach you Korean.

Not all are looking to hook up, most seem to want a friend or at least let it blossom into a relationship....

It's a great way to make korean friends, but don't expect to roll in and be in her bed within hours of meeting.

Learning Korean is a BiT**. In small towns there are no classes. The bookstores sell almost no books to teach you Korean, and the churches dont have anything to offer as well.

Heck I just started paying my high school students to teach me after 2 years of fustration.

As for exchange language skills. I sure you could end up in bed with a woman you teach English too. I try to do language exchange with some. Seems though they want to learn English more than teach me. Then they do want me to take them to bed.

But to each his own.

If you are serious about wanting to learn Korean, make sure that the woman's not really hot. It will throw off your concentration. Better yet, stick with someone who's the same gender.

But language exchanges can be too robotic. I'd meet people, and it was strictly at coffee shops only - never anything else. Not even a "Wow, my brain's tired. Let's get some dinner." I met this one woman for language exchange who was rather cold. Five minutes into the second meeting, I was asking about her weekend, talking about music, etc, she said, "We don't have anything in common, so why don't we just start studying now." After that, she sent a few text messages wondering where I went.

My best language exchange partner is also a great friend. We actually do things together. Movies, plays, hiking, etc.
