The other thread about ASPs got me thinking. I'm not leaving my job until after the summer, but it's going to be a month (or so) before the end of the contract. I have no choice, so can't see out the contract. I will not be giving notice. In order to ensure that the bank account in my name is closed when I leave, I'd like to go in to the bank and do it myself. So :

*Do I need to have either my card or bankbook to close the account, or will my arc suffice?

*If i do need a card or the bankbook, can I just go into the branch with my arc and get new ones (telling them I lost my purse, or something)?

I'd rather not let the company take care of it. They seem to have trouble just remembering to pay me at all these past couple of months.

Where are you card and bankbook?

I hope your employer doesn't have them!

Dude, keep up. I have two accounts, and my account is just fine. I, and only I, have the details to that one. The 2nd one, the middle man bank account if you will, is mine in name only, and yes my company has the card and book.

So, can I close the account with just an arc, or would I need a new card and book?

Thanks.

You better take ARC AND PASSPORT

Why not take your arc and passport to the bank now and tell them you lost your book and card and you would like replacements?

That's assuming you know the original PIN for the account.

Then if you change the PIN, they could deposit the money, but would be unable to transfer the large chunk out of your account.

I recommend doing this in your last month so that you get an extra large bonus...

Yeah, I'm not going to steal their money. I signed a contract for a certain amount, and even though they've pissed me off in the past, I'm no thief. All I want is to close the account.

So the consensus is that if I go in with my arc and passport, after I get my last pay but before I tell the company I'm leaving, I could go in and close the account? I can't see why that would be a problem with the bank, but I just wanted to check if anyone's had issues doing something similar.

Thanks for the replies.

I've been hearing about these scams for a while now, but I've never heard about someone who's closed one of these scam accounts and taken the money.

If it's all in your name, there's no problem, just bring a few forms of ID with you.

I say close it on your way to the airport and take the money. It's not stealing if it's in your account. It's just that your employers were unusually generous.

well, considering they have been committing fraud for the term of your contract and the fact that they have now made you liable to pay korean taxes on all money passing through your dummy account,,,it wouldnt really be stealing - you would just be taking some of the money that you will need to pay off your massive tax bill..

Yeah but if you close the account, what are you going to do with the money that's currently in it?

And what the last poster said is true. If you are NOT coming back to Korea...no worries. But if you are, you could be potentially hit with a huge tax bill...plus interest for all that money. And with the account closed down, it's going to look to the tax agency like you cut and ran.

OP,

Don't point the finger at other bad behavior to justify possible bad behavior on your part.

I agree, NOT stealing the money is the right thing to do.....................unless they seriously phuck you.

Well then just leave the account open in that case. When the tax agency comes after you, they will find that you are no longer in the country or employed there. Then they will be asking some hard questions of said company...which might be the beachhead into shutting down scamming banking accounts.

Just to be clear I am NOT advocating taking the money...but if you close the account...you're going to have to do something with it.
