| okay, I don't know much about baseball, but as that the main usa team playing? i find it hard to comprehend how the us would lose to them. |

it was a pretty competetive team, maybe a few all stars missing, but it was the meat and potatos of america.
first, puerto rico has a solid team.
second, america seems to not play well lately in these types of things.
i think puerto rico brought their A game, america didnt, result, rape without lube |

wow, that's a bit crap for the u.s.
is it a U.S national team, or a u.s league team made up of different nationals? cos i figured peurto rico have a good few players, but thought they would all play in america, do those guys play for peurto rico for these tournaments? |

Yeah, the P.R. team is made up (entirely?) of MLB players who play in the States. Even so, that was a surprising thrashing that was administered. The U.S. may be looking at another early exit in the WBC.
I'd still much rather see a more drawn-out tournament so that teams play each other in series instead of just one game head-to-head. As this is just entertainment, however, the powers that be obviously think this is a better format for getting people interested. |

yeah, all of the best ML players can represent their home countries, mainly being the US, Dominican Rep and Puerto Rico. Mexico and Venezuela also have good teams. Japan and Korea has a few MLBers but mostly they are still playing at home, and Cuba has all players from Cuba's league. but if a player is born in Mexico and plays in america, for the MLB he plays for Mexico.
That is why almost every country but america really cares about this tournament, sadly, americans dont have as much national pride. |

| Personally I'm more interested in a Red Sox/Yankees regular season series than I am in the WBC, but that's just my opinion. The WBC can increase international interest, so from that perspective I'd say it's good for the sport. |

cardinals fan here. the best player in baseball isn't in the tourny. he couldn't get insurance. it is just as well...who would he play for? his birth nation or the country he is currently a citizen of?
heck, if the mighty dominican republic (the brazil of baseball) can lose to the netherlands anything can happen. |

| puerto rico's lineup is stacked compared to the US's. i'd never even heard of 7 of the 9 US starters. |

The real irritating thing is because the US can't guarantee a crushing victory they don't even try.
They let the pitcher throw hand full of dog poo after hand full of talk poo over the plate just to keep them loose for a "real" game.
What a slap in the face of all the people we are trying to expose our national sport to.
The Puerto Ricans should have never let the US bow out. They should have piled it on til the bitter end. |

| If you are ignorant about the game of baseball, you shouldnt post your gleeful "stick it to the Yanks" comments. In MLB, great teams lose 4 out of 10 times. This is for the whole season. Only two teams last season had a better than 60% winning percentage. The worst teams routinely beat the best teams. The best teams even lose by ten runs during the course of the season. This is the nature of baseball. |

Huh? I don't really see anyone "stickin it to the yanks" here. (I think gringos would be more approiate in this context.)
I don't think stats and standard deviation come into play on this one. The US managent pretty much let PR knock crap pitches to every corner of the park, because it's easier to write of the WBC instead of actually competing, breakin sweat and risk losing with an actual effort. |
