Today while waiting for a page of Dave's to load I figured I should go check out how things are in the NHL. Looking over Vancouver's roster, I can only recognise five players (four of them Swedes, one of whom I thought belonged in Toronto). I can't believe how out of it I am. It really left me feeling unpatriotic. I also liked soccer before I came here, but while I could name a few hundred active soccer players I'd be hard pressed to name 20 active hockey players.
Has this happened to anyone else? |

| i'd say your problem has more to do with your choice of teams than the league. i'm allowed to say this because i'm a leafs fan. |

I totally keep up as I'm a big Bruins fan (hence my username) I am able to watch some games each week on the net, though recently the NHL has been cracking down quite a bit. Still this morning I got up at 4:00 a.m. and watched the Boston-Pittsburgh game which was very exciting though my Bruins lost, yet still maintain 1st overall in the East.
I am also in 2 yahoo fantasy hockey pools and do my lines daily. It's very fun and entertaining and completely free. Plus I'm going home for a trip next month and hope to go down to Boston to see an opening round game. So basically what I'm saying is that if you're committed to your team you will still keep track no matter what. Oh and I've been here in Korea for 12 years too. |

I lived in Australia for 12 years and this happened to me, but having lots of desk time I bought nhl.com and now really like hockey again. Actually I like it even more than before because I can watch all the league play.
Its only 80 bucks to watch all the games including the Canucks go to the finals. I get the feeling you were never really a big Canucks fan if you were suprised to see Sundin.

I have listened to or watched 80% of the past three seasons of Canucks games online since coming to Korea.
I probably catch more games here because of the awesome time difference -- afternoons are my downtime, so it's ideal to stream the games while doing chores at home or typing on the computer at Starbucks.
I'm not sure why I still listen, though. I'm celebrating completely alone, and won't be able to take part in the riots on Robson when we win the cup this summer... |

Oh I was once upon a time. Hell I used rearrange my schedule to listen to blacked-out games on CKNW. But, it's been a decade since I've lived around Vancouver. For whatever reason, perhaps because of becoming much more interested in the Premiership, I've really come to hate the leagues franchise system. I'd love to see a multi-tiered league where teams can drop or be promoted. Even when I lived in St Louis I used to go see the Canucks play there (for $15! - even play-off games at a time when Vancouver game tickets were getting scalped for $500+). |

I'm still as big a fan as I ever was, and I still follow my team as closely as I ever did - day in, day out. In some ways, the only bond I have at all to my hometown is the hockey team. If family and friends moved away there would be no reason for me to ever go back to Vancouver, but I'd still be a Canucks fan.
Unlike you, time and distance haven't caused me to lose touch with my team. I don't know what it is with some people - apparently we both grew up listening to CKNW games, but I stayed a fan while you didn't. Since I can't say I was always a bigger, 'truer' fan than you, I can't explain why.
(I have to say, the new kid on your block strikes me as an uncommon choice for a Canadian kid who grew up as a hockey fan. And, you can name 200 soccer players but you haven't started calling it "football" yet?) |

pay $80 through nhl.com and get nearly every NHL game for the remainder of the season and playoffs, live in excellent quality feeds, and on demand
there's no reason to give up on the sport you absolutely love
(though there are many back home who liked hockey just because others liked it: in that case, while you're here indeed take up soccer) |

| I have had the game centre package all year and try to catch at least one full game a week, but I have no interest in watching any team other than Montreal play. (I watch the highlights for every game though. Even if Nashville is playing the Coyotes.) I think I pay more attention to it now than I did before because I was never able to watch Canadiens games at home as I lived in Leaf Land and would only sometimes get the Habs games on French CBC. |

Why am I narrow minded? Because I don't care about the other teams? I already said I watch the highlights to EVERY game, but I have no interest in sitting down and watching two teams I don't really care about for 3 hours. I don't find Habs games to be lousy, so why don't you stop being so judgmental. Reminds me why I don't post here much anymore. |

I totally agree with you as I only watch my Bruins play. While I appreciate other games, I'm not getting up at 2:00 a.m. to watch two teams I don't care about, but I will do it for Boston playing anyone. |
