Anyone seen the US version of this British program?
Oh my god, how dumbed down is the US version.
Do Americans really have such a short attention span?
Every 5 mins a replay.
What a waste of such a well made British TV product. |

Are you perhaps not noticing that the replays come when they go to commercials, and since they don't show commercials during the show, you are seeing the replays? Love the show, by the way. They should have a gordon ramsey channel. |

I'm a big Gordon Ramsey fan and do have to concede that the British version runs a bit smoother BUT the American version has its strengths. He is able to film in a wider variety of locations, has a more interesting selection of restaurant styles to choose from, and the owners seem to be more explosive and narcissistic in different ways than the British owners. The glitz of the American production can be distracting but its still worth watching. I love how every show has a woman confiding that Gordon is a handsome older man or young man, depending on the woman's age.
My FAVORITE episode is in the British version when he tries to fix up a Scottish woman's restaurant in France and she abandons the business. Is that his only failure? |

Quite a few of the restaurants do shut. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitchen_Nightmares It takes more than an angry Brit reducing the manager to tears because the menu is boring, the kitchen is dirty and wallpaper sucks. He doesn't really bring much to the table other than a pep talk. Sure the owners will try harder after the show, but is Ramsey anything special. He is good entertainment and I like his other shows. I just feel you might as well send in MrT. I remember the girl in Paris too. She kept running to daddy every time her restaurant couldn't fund her Parisian lifestyle. Then Gordon offered the chef a job at his restaurant back in the UK.
edit: just thought I'd throw in this wiki quote

Some critics found Fox's adaptation of Kitchen Nightmares strayed from the strengths of the original Channel 4 series. Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune said, "Leave it to Fox to take something the Brits did pretty well and muck it up". She added, "Never mind the cooking; this edition of the show appears to be more interested in playing up the family dramas at the restaurants Ramsay visits".[13] Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times commented, "Whereas the British Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares is fundamentally a food show it has interesting things to show you about how a restaurant runs and a kitchen works, the wonders of local markets and what you can make from them if you're Gordon Ramsay or willing to follow his instructions the Fox edition emphasizes mishap, argument and emotional breakdown almost to the exclusion of cuisine". |

The British version had its share of family drama and idiosyncratic people too. Fox is a pretty trashy network compared to British television but that commentary smacks of tired whining that American viewers are unsophisticated. Take it for what it is. Fox is trying to sell a product to a much larger audience. It was never all about the food. It was about people changing how they viewed the world and themselves through the paradigm of food.
It just really bugs me how people are always comparing British TV and American (non-cable) TV. Or maybe its the generalities that all U.S. programming sucks. Sorry we all didn't grow up with free health care and quality shows like Dowdy the Dowager Drinks a Gin Toddy.

The U.S. version's nadir had to be the episode where Ramsay had to work with Muscles McDumbfuk, who appeared to have connections with the mafia. You know the one I'm referring to. The mafia guys kept trying to shake him down during the production. I completely lost faith in the U.S. version after that. Ramsay should've just said "Fuk this noise I'm out of here." |

The US version isn't as good as the UK one. I don't need all the confrontation and yelling to enjoy a show. Too many commercial breaks.
How many british shows have the americans butchered?
Coupling
Kitchen nightmares
Who's line is it anyways? Drew carey can't do improve and too many regular comedians. Also too many commercial breaks.
any other ones? |

I think it's fair to look at how an American network adapts an original British show. I'm also not claiming that British TV is better or free of trash TV. Just look up Trisha or the Jeremy Kyle show. The UK will never see a show as good as the Sapranos or Lost. Also high brow comedy animations seem beyond the British.
