Sorry to hear that, OP. I'm not sure what I would've done in your situation. I'm not that aggressive guy, but my home is my home. You just don't barge in there like that. Anyway, I think you handled it quite well.
I suggest that you find a new place to live AND change those locks immediately. Make sure that you get all the keys. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but...
My ex told me that, if both of the locks are not locked and someone steals all your stuff while you are away (or at sleep for that matter), the insurance company doesn't have to pay. Is this true? Ask your significant others if you have them. *^^* |

but haven't made an effort to say hi or meet me while I've smiled and anyong haseyo'd a whole lot. Only kids and some teachers accept me and want to interact with me. Passive aggressive xenophobia is norm. |

Even the police have stopped me on foot like 6 times in 2 weeks trying to introduce themselves and practice speaking English and none of them speak yet they're young adults. Police didn't express a dislike, but in a passive aggressive culture, they wouldn't if they didn't like me. |
Obviously people are trying to interact with you.
Bide your time and at give the town the finger come June. |

Has anyone asked a Korean person what the rule or social norm is? Or are all the ESL teachers just talking out their asses again? I guess it is probably the second.
Landlords in Korea can pretty much do as they want. Not saying its fine or ok, just saying that's a fact. But hey lets get the ESL teachers to (f)uck the system and show those damn asians a thing or two. After all we are ESL teachers, we can do what we want also. |

If my landlord were to key into my apartment unannounced, my steps would be:
1. Go find a locksmith myself and have the locks changed. Keep all the keys. Give the bill to my school & make sure they pay it.

I certainly wouldn't tell them the name of the locksmith who changed my lock! |

A very good point! I stand corrected.
Giving the bill to the school would give them the name of the locksmith, and thus an unlimited number of keys into your apartment. You can bet they'll want one or two backups made, and the locksmith will be more than happy to oblige. |

Do Korean landlords have every right to intrude on you?
What recourse can I take to ensure it never happens again?
Do you have the right to self defense where you can fight when someone sneaks up on you inside your apartment? |
1- No.
2- Change the locks the day you move in.
3- No. Regardless of who starts the fight or whether or not you were defending yourself, whomever gets the wrong end of the fight can sue for piles of blood money. |

Ladies, please do yourselves a favor and don't spray mace, cap spray, or any other chemical deterrent inside a small, unventilated room. You're going to mace yourself. It's unpleasant.

Change the locks. They have to give you notice before coming in to check out the place anyways. |
