I'm still as big a fan as I ever was, and I still follow my team as closely as I ever did - day in, day out. In some ways, the only bond I have at all to my hometown is the hockey team. If family and friends moved away there would be no reason for me to ever go back to Vancouver, but I'd still be a Canucks fan.
Unlike you, time and distance haven't caused me to lose touch with my team. I don't know what it is with some people - apparently we both grew up listening to CKNW games, but I stayed a fan while you didn't. Since I can't say I was always a bigger, 'truer' fan than you, I can't explain why.

It's just that they don't really feel like 'my team' anymore. I could see three players on the roster who were still there the last time I ever saw them play live. Now they seem like they're just another franchise. The continuity of the club that made the finals in '84 and '92 just seems to have gone. At least for me. At any rate I must confess that I'm not a very good Canadian / Vancouverite. |

| I have had the game centre package all year and try to catch at least one full game a week, but I have no interest in watching any team other than Montreal play. (I watch the highlights for every game though. Even if Nashville is playing the Coyotes.) I think I pay more attention to it now than I did before because I was never able to watch Canadiens games at home as I lived in Leaf Land and would only sometimes get the Habs games on French CBC. |
Each to his own but wow can you be that narrow minded. Habs games are quite lousy compared to many others. I am a Canucks fan 100% but still watch the other really good games and players. Watching Pittsburg play is beter than most hockey I have watched in my life. |
Why am I narrow minded? Because I don't care about the other teams? I already said I watch the highlights to EVERY game, but I have no interest in sitting down and watching two teams I don't really care about for 3 hours. I don't find Habs games to be lousy, so why don't you stop being so judgmental. Reminds me why I don't post here much anymore. |
I have to agree with not caring about other teams. If my team isn't involved, it's hard to watch. Although, come playoff time I might be interested if 2 teams were in a game 7 situation. |

i lost interest about the time the NHL wiped out the season a few years back. that coupled with the then blues ownership gutting the franchise (so as to sell?) to such an extent that they still haven't recovered.
it was hard enough being a blues fan. but to have the league wipe away the season (a promising one at that) and then have the team owners dump the next several was just too much.
john davidson came in as GM and promised the hardest working team in hockey. i gave them a try. sleet storm in st.louis. i swear there were more people working the game than in attendance. the blues were so lethargic as to induce rage. they couldn't even get it up to put on a show for the 500 or so hardcore fans. true hockey fans.
last blues game i'll ever attend. |

I was living in St Louis when Canada won the gold medal 2002 Olympics. I had to ask the bar staff at Blueberry Hill to turn on the game on one of the TVs at the back. It felt like I was the only person in the city watching it. Back in Vancouver traffic stopped because of all the revellers pouring out on the street. I think that says something about the viability of the sport in the city. It's very much a two-sport town, and hockey isn't one of them. |
