Which languages do you simply find grating for whatever reason?
1. Thai
I really don't like much about it at all. It sounds all nice coming from the airport, but when listening to the average Thai person I'm reminding of the aliens from Mars Attacks--"Ack...ack ack, ack ack ack"
2. Korean
Too guttural for my tastes. Also, the actual vocab is limited/incredibly repetitive. It really does show that they haven't had much contact with the outside world until just a while ago. How many times this winter did I hear my manager mutter "cold...ah...cold. Cold". Just once I'd have liked for some korean version of "freezing" or "[mod edit] freezing" or "colder than a witches tit". Something other than the same damned word 800 times a day.
3. Haitian
It's like French run through a garbage disposal...an angry, angry, garbage disposal. |

English, but it depends on who is speaking. |

I will have to second the choice of Thai as being annoying. I also can't stand chinese. I'm not sure if it is the language itself or the volume at which it's speakers speak it at.
By no means do I have anything against chinese people but I do remember one incident quite clearly. One day while waiting for a bus in Richmond B.C there was a group of about 5 middle aged chinese ladies, myself and a run down looking street kid. After about 10 minutes of this hideous cackling the street kid just looked at me and said "It's like a goddamned flock of schizophrenic geese isn't it?" I tried hard to express my distaste for his comment but after letting it sink in for a second I just had to laugh, I couldn't control it. LOL. |

Here to third Thai. Lovely country, lovely people, their language reminds me of a cockfight. |

I second Chinese. It's the only thing bad about Hong Kong.
Also, Tagalog. It sounds like "tikka takka tikka" |

Cantonese, Hong Kong Chinese. Or even more Vietmanese
The NG's are hard to pronounce and hard on the western ears.
Have you ever listened to vietmanese music? T___T |

Agreed on Vietnamese.
I think Thai is pretty, but Laotian is kinda grating.
Korean sounds cool, like Klingon or something. |

My vote goes to Greenlandic.
I quite like Vietnamese, it's suited well to the country. |

Odd..I actually really like Laotian as opposed to Thai even though they are so similar. Laotian seems so much calmer, or it could be the laotian people who are just calmer in general.
In the "klingon" category, I much prefer Mongolian to Korean. |

Arabic and Hebrew along with Korean are very ugly to listen to, gutteral languages. I really hate listening to Korean radio in the morning when they have a Korean woman with a high whistley voice doing news or something. Sometimes when you're on a bus or something, you can't get away from it. |

Chinese, Cantonese.....and erm...Spanish (from Spain that is). Mexican Spanish etc is okay for me though for some reason...maybe less of the lisps which gets annoying |

I do admit there are some languages that are easier on the ear, but FAR more important is the intent behind the words. The whiners who would obviously be more at home (but still maladjusted) in Dad's basement are FAR more grating on the ear. |

the Spanish lisp only happens on the 'z's, but it is a bit annoying.
RURAL Mexican Spanish is vastly more annoying though - they SING the goddamn thing (this is the Spanish you most often hear in US among Mexican immigrants)
anyways- these are all very subjective and personal opinions.
I like to stick to comments on languages I hear in enough dosage to comment.
on Korean - actually it's not the guttural sounds that annoy me, but the way they end many phrases and or sentences... they raise their voices and it comes out like a big phucking WHINE - this is especially grating coming from women with high pitches voices.
the endings usually end in AH!
or OH!
the turn these endings into high(er) pitched WHINES.
VERY annoying. |
