Nightmare with the school/hagwon I'm with. Personal issues with boss, misled about job, double standards, told to lie to parents, inconsistency, no organization, no real teaching, etc. Bottom line, I'm looking for something new. I want to get a Public School gig in May. The thing is, I don't think I will be able to get a LOR.

If I'm willing to get an exit order and do a visa run to Japan, can I cancel my visa without my employer? I need to give 60 days notice for a LOR and repay airline. I could possibly offer to have my entire April salary put towards repayment/bribing a LOR but I can't just ask without going all the way. Is it possible for me to get myself fired or simply ask them to fire me if I pay back only the airfare?

Can I just go to Immi and say "cancel my visa" and then show up the next day with the new visa documents asking them to process the new visa then go on a visa run? I called an English-speaking rep from Immi and she said my boss must give me an LOR or at least call Immi first to say I'm fired. But this contradicts the anecdotes on Dave's of people saying they just showed up at Immi and said "cancel my visa now please...here's my arc"

Any advice?

You can cancel your Visa but you need to be out of the country to do so. Once a teacher stops working (quits, is fired or completes the contract) the school is required to cancel the Visa within 2 weeks. If it is not canceled you can contact immigration and they will pretty much force the school to cancel it.
Now getting another job is a problem. If you've held an E-2 Visa for a minimum of 9 full months you can do a Japan Visa run, if it hasn't been a full 9 months you need to go back to your home country and start the process from scratch. Please be aware that when a Visa is cancelled before completion immigration is known to ask why. It goes on your record and can be told to a new employer or immigration can outright deny any future Visa.
I recommend talking to your boss and telling them that you are quitting. The school has two options the first one being that you give notice as stated in your contract and in return the school gives you a letter of release. The second option would be you quit as of that day (I recommend doing this after payday). Get everything in writing when you give notice signed by both parties. In the long run though if you've been at the school for a while now it's usually best to finish out the year. A year isn't really that long even at a crappy job. Most schools will question why a teacher isn't able to complete a year and no matter how much the teacher says that their job sucked it looks as if they cannot live up to there commitments.

are you sure? From experience and reading these forums it seems that you can cancel in country and then have it fully wiped when you go to the airport

This is correct. Go to immigration and *firmly* ask for an exit order. This will give you 15-30 days to absolutely and utterly leave the country.

While your visa is cancelled you can get the ball rollin' on a new job.

this is simply not true. i quit after only a month at my job and all i had to do was go to immigration then do a quick visa run to japan for my new job. you DO NOT have to go back to your home country.

I won't be able to get paid for April b/c any new positions start before payday.

What I need to know, is if it would be wisest to come clean after my first payday and offer to keep working so my co-workers don't get screwed over (and so they can collect my labor/wages to repay the ticket), or should I be prepared to be immediately fired and evicted and get ready to crash with friends?

And I'm low on funds. What are the odds of a GEPIK school prepaying a visa run to Japan?

You can have you visa cancelled IF you are on your way out of K-land, i.e. at an international airport or ferry terminal. If you are still in country, you cannot (unilaterally) go to an Immi office and have your visa cancelled (or transferred) - you need the co-operation of the employer.

It sucks but thems the rules. In K-land, the employer sponsors your (E-2) visa and owns you for the duration.

Sometimes telling them to cancel your visa and handing in your ARC doesn't work either. When I quit I left Korea then came back on a tourist visa, no problems going through immigration. I then had to leave a second time only that time I was told by immigration on the way back in that my visa had not been canceled and I got the third degree over why the immigration person on my previous trip gave me a tourist visa.

The bottom line is that 10 people can go through the exact same thing and have ten totally different outcomes.

Yes... good point! When exiting K-land, you must be insistent and make sure the Immi officer cancels your visa. Don't leave the wicket until you see they have done it. Human nature being what it is, a lazy officer can't be bothered and will not care if their (lack of) action causes problems for a 'foreigner' (who in their mind is 'running away' without fulfilling their contract) in future.

I haven't applied for my ARC yet. Should I just go in tomorrow and tell them I quit? Let them keep the first month's pay and then have them go down to Immi with me?

can't have two visas at once. Need l.o.r. to transfer or go home until your current visa expires. First sentence, I'm sure. The rest, I've been told. Call Immiigration. Have a Korean "friend" help. Good luck.

I just went through this shit. All you can do, is wait until your employer cancels it. Forget begging them, forget everything else you've read. You just gotta wait 10 business days and maybe they'll be nice and cancel it before them. I totally got screwed since I couldn't wait 2 weeks for my horrible school to cancel my visa.

why 10 business days? does showing up at immi mean that they call your sponsor and say "call in 10 business days to cancel it?" or do you mean 10 business days from the day I stop showing up?/quit/get fired.
