Not "arguably"... it was your fault. You get no sympathy from me (especially considering you have been in K-land for over two years and didn't 'suss out' K's reactions to illegal drug use).
Mind boggling! |

ahh, umm....the one out of Daegu delivered to my last school office. They opened it, photocopied EVERY page, including visa pages which nothing to do with Korea, put it back in the envelope, and then tried to tell me that it was like that. I only found out because one of the office girls was sweet on me....and drunk. |
Similarly, mine was delivered to and signed by the teaching assistant in the office of my school. But she didn't open it. She knows better than that. |

Wow, lots of sudden hate for me on here. Try to remember, guys, that I'm an actual human being and am going through a really tough time (one that is arguably my fault, I realize)... I mean I doubt you guys would be such di cks if we met and I told you about my situation in person... but anyway... have your laughs if you want them, I guess.
I came to Korea in November, 2007, so I didn't fall in love with someone or instantly fu ck myself over in two weeks. I successfully completed two contracts (one E2 and one C4) before screwing up this one. I quit smoking weed a few years back, but I was on vacation in Thailand so I smoked a few times. I had read that I would have ninety days to take my physical upon returning to Korea, so I didn't think it was a big deal at the time. Obviously, in hindsight, I regret this.
This is a public school, not a Hakwon. So maybe they won't be quite as vindictive- I don't know. I've been advised to go in Monday morning and apologize profusely to the principal and maybe even bring her a gift of some kind. So we'll see where that leaves me. |
I'm trying to put together an image of you in my mind.
A skinny guy, with boxers exposed, walking around butting heads with the Head English Teacher and glancing at other teachers as you walk by their classroom, who tells his students that he likes an occasional beer. You used to smoke dope, but you quit. But, you started back smoking dope in Thailand. You really believe your co-teacher is cool, hypothetically, with the idea that you smoke dope, so she stupidly mentioned this to the administrative peeps. And, your head is swimming. Your head is swimming!
Your head is swimming!
Einstein; you are not! |

Honestly, I have concerns whether you should even be here. My reasons for saying this are:
1) You've been here for 2 weeks and you are already "falling in love" with someone?
2) Knowing you were coming to Korea, you still smoked in Thailand? How incredibly irresponsible is that?
3) You "trusted" a Korean teacher to keep your secret having known said teacher for 2 weeks? Now you little secret is in writing?
4) It seems obvious you did not do adequate research prior to coming, which shows a certain degree of immaturity and combined with 1-3 above tells me this is not a good environment for you.
My suggestion is you cut your losses and go home, grow up a bit more, and try again in oh.....10 years or so......
Sorry if that sounds harsh, but I really do think you have not grown up enough to be here. |
It doesn't sound harsh, it sounds self-righteous and ill-informed.
I really adore it when some here try to make out that working in Korea is somehow only available to the really dynamic go-getters; the winners of life.
In reality anyone could do this job, and succeed. Teaching in Korea is not a professional environment, it's a lazy mans excuse for work; anyone can do it. You can be a wretched alcoholic, moderately to severely mentally ill, lazy, thick, stupid, unprofessional, incompetent, and an addict of many substances and you will shine my dear, shine! There is no argument against the above because I have seen it on so many occasions that I can't count it!
I've seen wretched, self-destructive alcoholics stumble from uni job to even better uni job. I've seen clueless 'professors' with absolutely no teacher training and an online Ba write baffling nonsense on a whiteboard that would induce an apoplectic fit of rage in a CELTA instructor.
So don't even dream of telling this guy he's not capable of teaching in Korea, when he so demonstrably and evidently is. |

I'm going to kind of repeat what I wrote when this thread first started (I was the first response). After reading all of the information and your explanations, and all of the other fun stuff that goes into these types of threads, I still wish you good luck and hope you land on your feet. For reasons that escape me, people want to see others go down in flames. I don't. I hope you land okay. You're probably not going to land on your feet in Korea because you've derailed with what has happened, but as with most things, hopefully it serves as a learning exercise for you, so that in the future it assures you don't make the same mistakes twice. I've never touched drugs in my life, but I don't have the same hostility towads others that have dabbled themselves; I often feel it is an oppressive atmosphere towards anyone that does use, but that's the laws of this country, and unfortunately, you came out on the wrong side of that situation. |

Go home and get a cash-job working for your uncle.
There are enough thug types here. It's embarrassing for those who take their jobs seriously and make an effort to make a positive impact in the kid's lives and the foreigner community. |

Like, oh my god. You smoked pot in Thailand? You must be a horrible loser with no hope for a future and an additiction that is uncontrollable.
These people drive me nuts. OP, pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and move on. I think you will still be fine in Korea, especially since there is no proof against you as to what happened, besides the written statement from your coworker, which is all he said/she said anyway.
So you trusted someone you shouldn't have. A little dumb, but certainly not an unforgiveable offense. I was a little worried about passing my test too, but I did, and it was fine. That, combined with the fact that the cannabis test isn't even required anymore, you would have been fine. Especially if you hadn't smoked in awhile and the incident took place a few weeks ago.
You're not smoking in Korea (I assume), so there's really no big deal. Marijuana is not a big deal...some people need to get the f*ck off their soapboxes and chill out. Seriously...I've done way more regrettable things under the influence of alcohol. What's the worst thing you do when you're high? Eat a whole pizza yourself and play video games for three hours straight? Someone call the DEA!
This crap pisses me off. Stop being so self-righteous. The OP came here because he's panicking, not because he wanted to be belittled by your sarcastic arrogance. Maybe YOU should try smoking a joint...might dislodge that stick you have up your butt.
Anyway, if your from the states, you won't need a new background check. They'll just grandfather in your old one. You can get your transcripts expressed here, and you'll be fine. You'll need your diploma, but immi has that. I really forsee no problem. Good luck, let us know how things go. |

Break it down for me then, sweetheart. How do you define whether someone has a problem with drugs? See if you can answer "yes" to the following questions:
1. Have you smoked marijuana in Thailand, knowing that it's illegal, when it is known worldwide that the penalty for many drug offenses in Thailand is death?
2. Have you smoked marijuana so close to a time when you're getting a job that requires a drug test that you're actually worried about failing the test?
3. Have you ever lost a job because of your drug use?
Think really, really hard, jillybean. The OP has a drug problem and needs to get that sorted out. |

The OP is clearly going to fail the test, IMMI will find out about it, and he will be banned and deported. |

OP, there's only ONE lesson you need to learn from this experience:
Never, ever post your problems on Dave's ESL cafe, especially when it involves using drugs. Some of these people just like kicking a dog when he's down.
Like that chick said, pick yourself up - dust yourself off and MOVE ON.
Good luck. |

Dude, you lived in the land of "Balli Balli" for over a year and you didn't think that your school wouldn't want you to get all your medical checks done almost immediately. You should have given it some more thought. "Technically" you have up to 90 days to register your ARC with immigration. Have you ever heard of anyone waiting that long? No way... You should have thought things through and now you be fucked!
I feel bad for you personally, but you did this to yourself. |

I've heard of loads of people putting it off that long. Not all of them were avoiding the drug test, many of them were just procrastinators. |
