|
|
I have been in correspondence with BridgeTefl recently about going to South Korea to teach English.
I have been told that demand for English teachers in South Korea is currently so great that I would be able to recieve a placement by only paying for and completing their 40 hour online course.
It all sounds too good to be true and I would like to find out what other people think about the whole thing. I would ideally like to sign up this week but am reluctant to without hearing the opinions from you people on the forum.
I have also been warned that the work could initially be more challenging for me teaching in South Korea with less hours of training behind me but my budget is quite tight.
Would I be a fool to part with my cash? Is there anyone who can vouch for the BridgeTefl online programs?
Here is their link http://www.teflonline.com/
Thanks

keep your cash - do you have a college degree?
if so you can get a job in K and shop around for where you'd like to earn a Tesol, Celta or similar degree/certificate
just read this forum for a bit and gather more info
if you don't have a degree - well someone else can cover that - |

I have a degree. BridgeTefl say that they will also source me a position. I'd prefer to have it all sorted before I departed for South Korea though. |

I took Bridge Linguatec's online course. I am a BORED certified English / Secondary teacher with a specialty in International Relations. I found that course immensely valuable to get me *back* into teaching mode after working like a dog for the man for 8 years. Their online course was dirt cheap as I recall, less than a few hundred bucks. My tutor was pretty decent too.
Find out of they have an online 'taster' course to help you find out if teaching is for you. Then you can jump in with both feet.
See you soon. |

Ok, you've got a degree. So check out the jobs board here at Daves, or on any other site. And get a job. You will be able to get everything organised (job, visa etc) from your home country, and you don't need to pay BridgeTEFL (or anyone else for that matter) a dime. Incase you are wondering, recruiters get paid (handsomely) to recruit YOU. So BridgeTEFL, will charge you for the course, and then get paid to place you in a school, no favours there. For the record, many Korean jobs (such as public schools etc) will give you a pay raise if you have a TEFL Certficate, HOWEVER, this certificate has to for a course that is over 100 hours, so this course doesn't help you at all.
As a matter of curiousity, how much is BridgeTEFL charging for this course and "placement"? |

Thanks for the replies so far.
BridgeTefl are charging $180.00 (123.00).
I originally got into contact with them because they have an offer on at the moment where they will source a placement in either China, Chile or South Korea for free, provided that i have a Tefl certificate. They assure me that the 40 hour is enough for them to look for work for me. My intention then would be to work towards my 100 hour once I have begun working in South Korea. |

why do a course? There are so so so many recruiters who would love to find you a job??? Its not like these guys will find you a better position....take control, find a recruiter, tell them what you want... |

Because if you're not a teacher, you need that pedagological stuff that they teach. It's not a replacement for being a real teacher, but it will help you get over some humps. |

Agreed, but if you are gonna do a course, atleast do a 100 hour course (not that great an investment) that will translate into a pay-raise. |

Agreed, but if you're getting work in a Hakwon, your extra credentials mean precisely dick. |

Do an on-site TESOL course, as I encourage everyone to. Don't bother with an online one, if you're really serious about working on your in-class practical teaching skills. You'll learn a lot more by being in a classroom than by sitting in front of your computer. |

Teachers get a whole semester of internship, plus a semester of practicum. I don't know where you got your degree that they didn't make you do that. |

I was thinking maybe do the 40 hours now and then taking my training further once I arrived in South Korea. Are courses easily accessible when I get there? |

Yes, of course, certified teachers do. But the majority of teachers here are not certified. On-site is better than online, to be sure. |

Am I going to struggle finding employment teaching without doing a course first? I'd definitely take the course once get there. It looks like a lot of the support I would get from having gone with BridgeTefl is also around this forum too. Am I correct in that assumption? |
