So the other night I was at the bar and I caught some of the Force/sharks rugby game. I have never seen rugby before, but I was blown away. As a past american football player, I found it to be like the best parts of football distilled and then mixed with crystal meth- in other words I need to play this game.
Are there any teams around that would accept a complete noob who wants to give it a go? I'll bring beer.

I believe they only play touch rugby though (so much more of a running, strategical game, and no physical aspect). Personally I think touch rugby sucks, as it deviates too greatly from Rugby and the physical aspect is what makes the game (this coming from a skinny dude, who would and did get the shit kicked out of him in "real" Rugby ^^).

Rugby is great. You should try looking up "Rugby League" on youtube. A slightly different game which is far more entertaining than rugby.

Touch is good to play. Boring as hell to watch, though. I have literally played probably thousands of hours of touch. We used to play from morning till night at school. The best part about it is you can play anywhere.

Don't believe the above guy, Rugby League is the inferior version of the game. It's made for meat heads that just like to run around and bash into each other all day. Rugby Union has much more finesse and skill, I find it more entertaining as well. Plus it is more beginner friendly, you can be fat and unfit and still get a little out of Rugby Union.

I played a lot of touch at school because we didn't have any playing fields. It is fun to play, not that great to watch though I agree. Like a wimpier version of Rugby 7s.

Yeah, ignore the bit about Rugby League being more entertaining, IMO it isn't, not by a long shot. I think there is a lot more creativity and artistry in Rugby Union. There is too much of a fear of losing possession in Rugby League, they don't take as many risks and you get less individual flair. It's also a lot more 'stop-start'.

Anyway they are 2 very different games, what I find interesting in a game of Union others would think boring.

well, I'm definitely out for the touch game. I played running back and lineman in American football. I hate touch football (takes strength out of the equation)- so I'll probably fell the same in a game of rugby. As for league vs. regular, they both sound good- its just a matter of what's available.

Rugby league is a professional adaptation of union. The great appeal of Union was that it was played by amatuers. League is more popular in the North of England, whereas Union is still the game of choice down South, especially in the South West and Wales.

If you want to enjoy real rugby, then go for Union.

The OP cited a rugby league game that sparked his interest. Union is probally more refined (in many ways) but a good league game is always good to see. OP for the best games download a torrent of the 2008 third state of origin match.

The 'which is better, Rugby or Rugby League?' debate has been around for a long while. Until recently, rugby would get my vote, hands down, though the last couple of years have been a different kettle of fish. The S14 (the competition which the OP was referencing) has been total shite with the exception of 1 game this year - last week's Blues v Chiefs. (and maybe the Canes v Crusaders - it's always good to see the sheep-shaggers go down). Both the players and referees and players don't know the rules, the new rules have turned the game into some sort of scrag/force-back mix, and many players are getting injured and unable to play because of player fatigue. (The AB's get about 1 month off a year - no where near enough down-time)

On the flip-side, The NRL (rugby league) has been cranking. Exciting and close games, no confusion, passion. Anyone catch the Warriors v Manly or the Broncos v Storm on the weekend? Would put any of the S14 games to shame and that's just the pick of the 2nd round (S14 is coming into week 7 or 8 )

Anyways, that's just my perception and its purely about Southern Hemisphere rugby/rugby league - U don't know? - better ask someone !

PINI is on the ball here......it seems with the new rules, too many games and many players leaving, the Super 14 just has not got it any more.....its boring. On the other hand the NRL this season has been amazing Cowboys-Broncos, Melbourne-Broncos, Manly-Warriors, Dogs-Penrith, St George-Melbourne all cracking tight games not to mention the drubbing last year's wooden spooners gave the premiers and the first round performance of the Bunnies. And it does not let up this weekend with Brisbane playing in Auckland and Melbourne going to Townsville. Even though league has nothing on rugby internationally the World Cup final last year was much more entertaining that any of the rugby world cup finals since NZ vs SA and that was only entertaining cause it was close.
