I am seriously frustrated and hope someone can help!

I am trying to leave early (2 weeks before my contract ends). The EPIK counselor told me that as long as my principal would sign off on it then I could leave early and still receive severance.
My POE person told me that the only way to still receive severance would be to use the 14 paid vacation days in my contract. When I asked her if those were above and beyond the usual vacation I get during winter and summer break (the same as the Korean teachers get) she didnt know.
How does she not know????

Has anyone ever worked out a way to leave a little early and still receive severance???

The other sticky issue is that when I renewed my contract last year they made a mistake and the dates on the contract are the actual dates I WANT, but in the fall they changed it to match the first contract I had....so I am trying to get them to honour the original one but no one seems to know whats going on!

HELP!

You would have to complete the year in order to get severence. If you use your vacation days (yes - the 14 paid vacation days that you get during winter and summer...what other vacation days are you thinking about), You can technically go home 2 weeks early...but still be at work as you are "on vacation" and thus recieve your severence. (By rights you should only have to use about 10 days vacation as some of those days would fall on weekends.)

If you've used up all your vacation you are out of luck.

I understand that those are the 14 vacation days in the contract, but what I mean is - when we are on vacation and not coming to school its alot more than 14 days.....so how do those 14 days work? are they extra on top of what we get?
i mean i didnt say, hey can i have 14 days off - they just gave them to me because everyone else is off too.......

does that make any sense??

I know what you mean.

You are only entitled to 14 working days vacation. Those extra days you get off because everyone else is off, is a bonus. Many public school teachers would have to work during that time (summer/winter camps or just plain ol' deskwarming). So you've done well for yourself there.

Regarding your current issue, it muddies the water though. If they've docked your vacation days during the vacation you may be out of luck. Best port of call is go to your school, say you'd like to leave 2 weeks early and that you'd like to use your contractual vacation days to do so. Your school may have dropped the ball and you get lucky.

If the time you want to leave falls during the semester, the school may very well play hardball, if your contract ends say August 31, and you want to leave before 2 weeks before then and you have vacation, it shouldn't be a problem.
