My co-teacher distinctly told me that the afterschool lessons that I was requested to do would begin on May 13th, and she saw me write it down. Turns out it's today. I've been here long enough that I don't really have an excuse for being caught totally unprepared, but I admit I have nothing ready and hadn't even started thinking about it.

I have very little time to prepare anything today, especially from scratch. It's only the first class so I'm not too worried about it, but it's for an hour and I'm used to only planning for 40 minutes. It's for 21 students from elementary grades 1, 2 and 3, which I don't have a lot of experience teaching, especially not mixed (this seems like such a bad idea). I have have no idea how their English level is.

So ordinarily I wouldn't ask for basic lesson planning help, but I'm hoping someone will get me out of hot water here. Should I put the students in groups of mixed grade levels, or group them by grade so I can work with them by level? I know I can kill some time showing them how to write their names in English and doing introductions, but what song can I teach them that's pretty easy but can burn up ten minutes? What else would you do with them?

Get some notecards and help them write their names in English.. Most won't know how and that'll take 10 mins at least..Then have them introduce themselves using their name card.. Higher ones could maybe say..My name ______ and I like _______... Perhaps review numbers/alphabet with them.. Most will know but some won't.. Put them in groupls of 3/4 and have them make (random) letters with their bodies.. Hokey pokey's good for teaching body parts.. and they mostly like it... Musical chairs with clothing.. Example: say "red socks" and whoever's wearing red socks must change seats... (or NOT wearing red socks).. ummm.. that's a few off the top of my head...

Sesame street is good for those ages. We did Ernie and Burt fixing a t.v. today and I found the video on youtube.
Grover Alaphabet soup is also a good video. There is lots of stuff there.
